May 1680

Date. Nature and Substance of the Entry. Reference.
May 3. Same to Sir Creswell Levins, Attorney General, of the petition of Nathaniel Child, shewing that the Crown has, time out of mind, been seized in fee of the ancient town, manor, borough and hospital of Wareham, co. Dorset, at the rent 10l. 1s. 3d., and there is an ancient corporation by prescription and 108 tenants of the said manor and 13 farms and tenements to the said hospital and the church called St. Mary's church by royal foundation, "and all the premises by settlement made are to maintain the same"; and the government and care of the said manor, borough and hospital was committed to 14 knights, esquires and gentlemen of the town and county as Trustees, whereof 13 being dead, petitioner is sole surviving: and since the Restoration petitioner has obtained two decrees in the Exchequer, one for the manor, etc., the other for the tithes of the said church: but since Oliver Cromwell usurped the Government [he] did by his unjust authority alter the constitution of the ancient corporation and hospital, and Andrew Loder, Jno. Fursman and George Gillingham with others their confederates do still maintain the same: therefore prays that said Loder, Furseman and Gillingham may be sent for and that the King and the poor may be vindicated in their just rights.
