Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to observe an order of the King in Council, dated Whitehall, May 31.
Prefixing : said order. By order in Council of March 20 last an embargo was ordered to be laid on all ships in order to the better manning of the fleet which was then in preparation. His Majesty this day thought fit in Council to order that the said embargo be immediately taken off, that so all ships may prosecute their intended voyages. Treasurer Danby is to take notice hereof and to issue all necessary orders accordingly.

Reference from same to same of the petition of the owner of the ship Lancaster, of London, arriving from Virginia with tobacco and sassafras, and which is seized at Swansea for not being solely owned by English. Ibid.
Treasurer Danby's subscription of a docquet of a grant to Ric. Robinson of the room and place of one of his Majesty's musicians in ordinary for the flute and sackbutt upon surrender of Phi. Beckett : with the wages and fee of 44l. per an. and 16l. 2s. 6d. per an. for a livery : to be payable quarterly out of the Exchequer from Lady day last : with direction for payment of the arrears due to said Becket from 1668, Michaelmas, to 1678, Lady day, notwithstanding the said surrender. Charles Bertie to the Wine Licence Commissioners. Mr. Masters has a tally on you for 600l. whereof there is present occasion for 300l., which sum Treasurer Danby desires you to advance, and will allow you 8 per cent. thereon. This 300l. I desire you to lend Mr. Masters forthwith, his Majesty's service being much concerned in the despatch of this business, which I commit to your care. Out Letters (General) p. 261.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the King's Remembrancer for process of extent against Thomas Chapman and his estate upon bonds as already ordered by warrant of April 17 last, ut supra, p. 967 and upon an obligation dated Jan. 10 last in 185l.,- conditioned to pay 92l. 16s. 7½d. at several days past ; the former warrant for process not having comprehended said obligation : said Chapman having absconded. Allowance by same to Sir Godfrey Copley of the sum of 139l. 18s. 2d. as cravings upon his account as sheriff for co. Yorks for the year ended 1677, Sept. 29 : which [cravings] the undersheriff swears were expended part to his knowledge and the rest as he verily believes : same being allowed by Baron Littleton. June (altered from July) 4. Same from same to Sir John Osborne, Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer, to make records of surplusage on any other sheriffs' arrears to meet the surplusage on the accounts of Thomas Gould and Sir John Shorter, Sheriffs of London, who are in surplusage having been lately directed to pay several sums of money for apprehending, etc., several highway robbers and burglars. June 5. Charles Bertie to the Customs Cashier. There are tallies struck on you for 549l. each to Sir John Paul and Sir William Swan. You are desired to advance said sums to them. Treasurer Danby will allow you 8 per cent. interest until repayment. Out Letters (General) p. 262.
June 6. Reference from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Oliver Westland for leave to land about 8,300 deals lately come from Swedeland in the Hope, of Hull, on giving security to pay what they shall be rated at at the landing ; they being a sort of deals that are not rated in the Book of Rates. Out Letters (Customs) IV. p. 67.
Warrant from same to same to deliver, Customs free, 61 chests lately arrived in the Edgar, Capt. Downing commander, now lying at the New Crane ; 54 thereof being for the King and 6 for the Duke of Monmouth containing Rosolis [Rosa solis] and other perfumed liquors, being presents from the Duchess of Savoy. Charles Bertie to the Speaker [of the House of Commons, Edward Seymour in his capacity as Treasurer of the Navy]. Mr. Kent [Cashier of the Customs, but in this case in his private capacity] having undertaken to furnish his loan of 70,000l. for the Navy upon the credit of the Additional Excise, Treasurer Danby desires you to cause the bills for stores [which bills are drawn] in course (and are assigned for payment out of such money as the Lord Treasurer shall direct) to be paid out of such money [furnished or lent by Mr. Kent]. And when such bills are fully paid you are to keep the residue of the said loan money in your hands for such other uses as Treasurer Danby shall be importuned for, and of which you shall have an account from time to time from me. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Clerk of the Pipe for a fresh lease under the Exchequer seal to Hannah Dodgeon (Dodgein, widow of Capt. Hugh Dodgeine) of several chantry and quit rents payable out of (altered to to) the manor of Beverley, co. Yorks, amounting to 46l. 5s. 7½d. according to Auditor Aldworth's particular, but amounting to 72l. according to the Parliamentary survey : the grant to be for 31 years from Lady day last : at a rent of 6s. 8d. and no fine.
Prefixing : note of Auditor Aldworth's two particulars of the premises and the Surveyor General's ratal : the latter specifies the term as for 31 years from the determination of leases made by the Trustees for the sale of fee Farm Rents to the Marquess of Winchester and others : without fine in consideration of the good service done by said Capt. Dodgein to the Duke of Albemarle towards his Majesty's restoration.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to deliver to Jacob Alvarez, Customs free, a seizure of a point apron and five small bundles of small ribbons lately brought by him in the pacquet boat from Amsterdam and seized by Nicholas Denham and Jeremiah Hayes at Harwich : reasonable satisfaction to be first given by Alvarez to said officers for their seizure. June 11. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a groat seal for a grant to John Tregagle of a certain duty or fine called Post Groats, being 4d., heretofore paid by the tinners within the Duchy of Cornwall for every hundred weight of tin coined between Michaelmas and Midsummer ; which duty by the iniquity of the late times was wholly neglected and lost to the King : the said Tregagle having, as Receiver of the revenue of said Duchy, by his great care and diligence not only greatly advanced said revenue, but having also lately recovered to the Crown the said duty of Post Groats, which recovery has and may occasion much charge and trouble to him, so that by reason thereof and of his care to prevent the embezzlement of the Coinage duty, he is at much greater charge than any of his predecessors. The present grant is to be for seven years from 1675, Michaelmas, under the yearly rent of 10l. (Treasurer Danby's subscription dated June 22 of docquet hereof.) King's Warrant Book VI. p. 39. Charles Bertie to the Customs Cashier. Treasurer Danby desires you to advance 1,000l. to Sir Francis Chaplyn forthwith "which you shall be repaid or have a regular discharge." Out Letters (General) p. 263.
Same to same to bring in notwithstanding any former restriction, 1,239l. 14s. 8d. into the Exchequer as already written for Dec. 22 last supra p. 824, for the [King's] Musicians [bringing] same in in this method, viz., 239l. 14s. 8d. this week and the remainder by 200l. a week during the five following weeks successively. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor Generel for a great seal for a grant of the office or place of a King's waiter [London port] to Thomas Carpender (Carpenter), gent., viz., for life ; in reversion after any four of the following, viz., John Marshall, Thomas Raymond, Gerard Andrews, John Shaw, Nicholas Parke, Samuel Ward, Andrew Haynes, John Bowles, Francis Daeket, Samuel Phillips, Samuel Danvers, Francis Roberts, Hugh Bantock, Joseph Jordan, Lawrence Corbet, John Charnock, Thomas Charnock, John Field, Ellis Lloyd, and also in reversion after William Tallman, Thomas Apprice, Fulk Emms and Edward Agberow. Same to the Attorney General for a surrender to be made to the King of two leases lately made of the manor, liberty and bailiwick of Westminster and the manor of Neats Court, co. Kent, to Henry Guy and Robert Cook, Esqrs., in trust for John Hall ; and thereupon for a great seal to be prepared for a grant and demise to said John Hall of the said manor of Neats Court, and of all the manor or bailiwick or reputed manor or bailiwick of Westminster, and of the several messuages, houses, lands, tenements and hereditaments thereto belonging or reputed to belong thereto, which are now in jointure to the Queen Consort as in the particular annexed [missing] of the Auditor of the County of Middlesex, and rated in the Surveyor General's ratal annexed [missing], to be of the yearly value of 147l. 19s. 6d., and particularly the houses and buildings called Denham's Buildings in or near Scotland Yard, whether they be or be not parcel of the said manor or bailiwick of Westminster : (excepting the several palaces, houses, parks and other things in the said ratal advised to be excepted) : to hold from 1676, Christmas, for 80 years under the present rents of 2l. 10s. 8d. and 7l. 3s. 4d., payable as in the former leases. And whereas certain leases and terms of years have been already granted by the King, or by others assigned, of all or the greatest part of the premises, amongst other things, to the Trustees of the Queen Consort, which [estate] may continue longer than the term hereby granted and the King's intention being to grant to said Hall an estate in law of and in all such parts of the said premises as are no part of the jointure of the Queen Consort and also to empower and direct the Trustees of the Queen Consort in case the said Queen shall think fit, to grant, a present estate by leases of the premises to said Hall for said 80 years under abovesaid rents of 2l. 16s. 8d. and 7l. 3s. 4d., or in case the said Queen shall not consent then to grant the premises immediately after the said Queen's death for so many of the said 80 years as shall be then unexpired and under the abovesaid two rents ; therefore the said Trustees are to execute such lease accordingly without expecting any further authority from the King. John Man, the Collector there, upon pretence that some Scotchmen had an interest therein, although the owners and freighters know no such thing, so that said ship is detained in Wales and cannot be brought to London to pay the Customs on the goods which [Customs] would amount to above 700l. Treasurer Danby dated from the Cockpit to the Duke of Lauderdale at Edinburgh. You will understand by another way what the King has ordered in the case of the prize ship Tortoise, which hath now for four years been expecting an issue in the way of justice there [Scotland]. The length of time hath occasioned some trouble to his Majesty by the repeated importunity of those who have assignments on the product of that prize, the entire interest whereof is hitherto in his Majesty. All that I shall pray is that you would countenance the despatch of that business, which being suitable to his Majesty's orders I leave to your consideration.
