Treasurer Oxford to Robert Lowther, Captain General and Governor in Chief of Barbados. A representation was some time since made to Treasurer Godolphin that Charles Thomas, Receiver General of the Casual Revenue of said Island, died in debt to her Majesty on his account of said revenue, but in credit for considerable sums as Treasurer of the said Island. Treasurer Godolphin wrote 1707 June 4 to the Governor of Barbados for a statement of said accounts. It has since been represented to me by Susanna Thomas, only daughter of said Cha. Thomas, that the said accounts are yet depending undetermined, to her apparent ruin, inasmuch as it is to be feared that the executors of her said father under colour of his being indebted to the Crown delay accounting with her and do retain and withhold from her all that belongs to her of her said father's estate, so that she would want the necessary means for her education were it not for the help of her friends, although she is informed her father died possessed of a very considerable estate. This being the case of an orphan, I do earnestly recommend it to you to give order for stating and adjusting the said accounts and payment of the balances thereupon. Ibid., p. 443.
June 16. | Treasury reference to the Commissioners of Taxes of the petition of the sureties of Geo. Hosier, late Receiver General for Co. Salop, praying stay of process against them; they having recovered part of his estate of 8,501l. 12s. 0d. against his debt to the Crown and hope to clear the rest of his debt by the next term. Reference Book IX, p. 126.
Same to Mr. Wilcox, Surveyor General of Woods, Trent South, of the petition of Francis Negus, Ranger of Bagshot Rails and Sandhurst Walks in Windsor Forest, shewing that he erected a pen for several of the stags lately brought to stock Windsor Forest, but same was lately burned by a fire kindled in the heath; therefore proposing (as there is a necessity for some proper place to feed them) that the old rails about the lodge be heightened and some new added so that eight acres may be enclosed to sow turnips “ which with the usual allowance for hay may probably preserve them [the deer] from the country people": also praying for repairs at the Lodge. Ibid., p. 127.
Subscription by Treasurer Oxford for the execution of a Lord Chamberlain's warrant to the Master of the Jewel House for the delivery to Mr. Marshall [her Majesty's] Studmaster, of two gold cups, one of 100 guineas, the other of 100l., for the horse races in Yorkshire for the year 1713: to an estimate of 207l. Warrants not Relating to Money XXII, p. 26.

(Money warrant dated June 19 hereon.) (Money order dated June 20 hereon.) Queen's Warrant Book XXV, p. 383. Order Book VIII, p. 301.
Same dated Kensington for 2,300l. to Edward Barker, Treasurer to Queen Anne's Bounty ("Treasurer to the Governors of our Bounty for the augmentation of the maintenance of the Poor Clergy"): without account, save such as he is to render to the said Governors: and is for the purposes as in the charter of incorporation of said bounty dated 1704 Nov. 3. (Money warrant dated June 22 hereon.) (Money order dated June 26 hereon.) Queen's Warrant Book XXV, pp. 383–4. Order Book VIII, p. 306.

June 17. | Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Customs Commissioners to depute Lewis Lewis as an additional landwaiter at Newcastle and thereupon to sink the salaries of the coalwaiters there; taking care that the landwaiters do inspect the coal trade.
Prefixing: memorial by said Commissioners. There are two coastwaiters on the Establishment of Newcastle port, Anthony Wooley (lately deceased) at 40l. per an. and Lewis Lewis at 20l per an. That business grows wholly useless by the method of ascertaining the measure of coals to be shipped at that port as appointed by the Act for the Admeasurement of Keels [30 Car. II, c. 8]. Therefore the said two officers were employed in inspecting the coast trade, which in that part is very considerable. We propose that the said employments of coalwaiters be struck off the Establishment and that Lewis (who is qualified and well behaved himself) be appointed an additional landwaiter at 40l. per an. and that all the landwaiters be obliged to take care of and inspect the coast trade agreeably to the practice of other ports, whereby the business will be more equally distributed. Out Letters (Customs) XVI, pp. 35–6.
Treasury reference to the Attorney General of the petition of Joseph Denham for a reward for himself and his friends for discovering Morgan Whitley's effects. Reference Book IX, p. 127.
Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Customs Commissioners to deliver up the bonds of William Smith, late Collector of Chester and Liverpool, to his relict, Elizabeth Smith, on payment of the balance due on his account; she being willing (rather than bear the fatigue of further solicitations) to submit to the loss of a bill of 50l. returned by his clerk and Sir B. Scudamore, his predecessor, which should however have been placed to the account of said Scudamore, in whose time the bill was drawn. Warrants not Relating to Money XXII, pp. 84–5.
