William Lowndes to Secretary St. John. I have read to my Lord Treasurer the enclosed letter [missing] from Mr. Burchet, Secretary of the Admiralty, relating to a bond entered into by several merchants to pay the charge of re-fitting in one of her Majesty's docks at Portsmouth the ship Staden of Stockholm, which [bond] they pray may be discharged. Please lay same before the Queen and communicate the Queen's orders thereon to the Swedish Ambassador here [Carl, Count Gyllenborg] who prosecutes this affair. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 39. |

Same to the [Principal] Officers of the Works to view and measure the works done in Hyde Park by Michael Studholme, Surveyor of her Majesty's Private Roads, to wit the mending of the road therein to the amount of 1,085l. 11s. 11d. and repairing the ways leading into the gates of that park and other her Majesty's private roads and keeping in repair her Majesty's road between Hockerill and Stanstead in the way to Newmarket. Treasury reference to Sir Edward Northey, Attorney General, of the petition of Lady Kath. Paul shewing that as executrix to her husband William Paul, late one of the Farmers of the Prizage of Wines, she is threatened to be prosecuted for an arrear of 5,136l. 5s. 4½d. on the new Subsidy on the said Prizage Wines: that it is conceived that the said arrear is applicable to the uses of the Civil Government and not particularly appropriated by the Acts which granted the said new Subsidy: that the petitioner is entitled to 100l. per an. payable out of fee farm rents by grant from Charles II., which is settled on her as part of her jointure: that the said arrear if prosecuted will take away the whole personal estate left by her husband and be the ruin of herself and children: therefore proposing to release to the Crown the said fee farm rent of 100l. in discharge of said arrear. Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Miles Rudland concerning the Custom House warehouse, wharf, crane and other conveniences at Harwich of which he is owner, on which he spent 150l. on strength of a negotiation with the Customs officers there for a lease from him to them, but the proceedings were stopped by order of the Customs Commissioners in London: therefore praying relief. Same to William Borrett of the petition of William Courtenay et al. shewing that they were the Queen's principal evidence against Col. John Rice (who fraudulently obtained a very considerable sum of money from the Government on pretence of his having brought over a Regiment of Horse upon the surrender of Limerick) and procured him to be taken on a capias ad computandum, prevented his putting in sham bail and rendered him easily compellable to pass his accounts, he having sufficient effects to pay the same; that they were offered considerable rewards to stop their proceedings, which they refused and have received no compensation, having been at 200l. charge thereon: therefore praying satisfaction. William Blathwayt to the Commissioners for Public Accounts. On the 13 Sept. last I submitted to you such accounts of the Plantation revenues as were then come to my hands from 13 Dec. 1701 to 25 March 1711. By the second article of your precept of July 9 last I am directed to exhibit like quarterly accounts from 1711 March 25. By the last ships from Virginia I have received the continued accounts of those revenues and submit copies thereof herewith: as likewise a copy of an account (which remained in my custody while in the country) of Charles Thomas, Esq., deceased, late Casual Receiver [Receiver of the Casual Revenue] of the Islands of Barbados, "wherein all diligence has been used in prosecuting the executors of the said Receiver as there is now great hopes of a speedy recovery of what is due to her Majesty according to letters lately received from thence." |
