Treasury reference to John Dod and John Waters of the petition of the wives and relations of about 13 sailors who made their escape out of Dinant prison on Feb 26 last, setting forth the great hardships they underwent before they could obtain a vessel for their purpose; that they seized a vessel laden with corn which they brought into Guernsey where it was seized from them by the Commissary and condemned and sold as prize and the money returned to the Lord Admiral and the said sailors ordered on board her Majesty's ships Torbay, Orford & New Ruby: therefore praying a grant of the said prize money for taking the said vessel & cargo from the enemy. William Lowndes to Mr. Bromeley. The arrear mentioned by you is in charge before the auditor of Co. Durham; and Robert Gilliver was authorised to collect same with other arrears. But the Lord Treasurer has thought fit to revoke Gilliver's authority, finding that he made an ill use thereof: “whereby I don't doubt but you will be easy as to any further demand from him or any of his substitutes.” But the said rent doth still remain in charge as 69s. for 34½ years arrears to Michaelmas 1694 on the annual rent of 2s. due from the tenant & occupier of land in Castle Edon in the bishopric of Durham formerly belonging to Ralph Claxton. “If there be anything still wanting for your future ease in this matter I shall be ready to give you my advice and assistance when I come to town.” Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 1. |
