Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Customs Commissioners to cause the allowances of 12 superannuated tidesmen to be borne and defrayed by way of average by the 12 junior tidesmen on the establishment from time to time; the said Commissioners having proposed to constitute new tidesmen in their place to do duty for their weekly pay only, leaving the annual pay for the said superannuated officers “the said charge to be borne by way of average among the said new officers”: and further that the “six new [officers] succeeding to the 35l. list [saddled] with this charge [of superannuation] should be first removed into the 40l. list”: which latter proposal the Lord Treasurer sanctioned by his warrant of May 14 last, supra, p. 238, but it is now represented that although several new tidesmen have been since appointed the deductions for the subsistence of the said superannuated officers are still made out of the salaries of the twelve” officers appointed in the said warrant of May 14; which is contrary to what was intended thereby.
