Footnotes

  • 1. The estimates for the year 1705 for the 40,000 men to act with the Forces of the Allies in the Low Countries were laid before the House of Commons on the 3 Nov. 1704 by Henry St. John, the Secretary at War. Under the head of extraordinary expenses of the war these estimates included the following (amongst other) items :
    £ s. d.
for levy money for recruiting the horses of the English Horse and Dragoons lost at the battles of Schellenberg and Blenheim 6725 0 0
for levy money for recruiting the men and horses of the Luneburg Troops in her Majesty's pay lost in those actions ; according to the allowances made by the States to the Troops in their service 8940 10 0
for the men and horses of a Regiment of Dragoons of Saxe Gotha in her Majesty's pay, lost in the same actions 531 0 0
for her Majesty's share of levy money for recruiting the men and horses of the Troops of Denmark, Prussia and Hesse Cassel in the [joint] service and pay of her Majesty and the States General, lost in the same actions 14593 10 0
These last 3 items amount not to 24,665l. 0s. 0d. but to 24,065l. 0s. 0d. But when on the 11th November the House came to vote supply for the Forces and the War it adopted the wrong figure for this item of extraordinaries and voted 24,665l. for the last three items above enumerated. (See Commons Journals XIV, pp. 397, 412).
