Revenue for several years past) to audit, state and engross the
accounts of the revenue arising by King's or Queen's Fines for
purchasing writs of Covenant: the accounts of which revenue have

particular of 6 out of 7 old houses in Rochester ut supra p. 288 in
order to a lease thereof to William Lavender for 31 years at the
rent of 6s. 8d. and fine of 20l. |

Prefixing: said Surveyor General's report on Lavender's petition
for same. He alleges they were built before the first Dutch war
for laying stores in but for 30 years have not been used nor any
profit made thereof and are so far out of repair that it will
cost 200l. to make them fit for any use. The Victualling Commissioners inform me that one great storehouse of 120 foot long and
26 foot deep is in repair and serviceable to the Victualling and
cannot be parted with. The other six are small tenements 100
foot in front and 26 foot deep "which are said to be employed in
the late Holland wars for an hospital for sick and wounded seamen
and since that, the poor inhabitants of Rochester (these houses being
situated on the back side of the city) have sheltered themselves
therein without paying any rent" as is certified by the Victualler's
Agent Mr. Rowland Crisp of Chatham. When repaired they will
not yield above 18l. per an. [in all]. The said Commissioners also
certify that on the 15th May 1697 there was paid to the petitioner
[Lavender] 600l. in Exchequer Bills for several warrants due to him
and on the 8th of June 1600l. in salt tallies for several warrants
amounting to 1360l. (240l. being allowed for the 15 per cent. discount)
and "that though some persons that had salt tallies at that time did
make advantage of them by putting them into the Bank yet they
are apt to think that the petitioner's condition was then so streight
and his creditors so fierce upon him that he might sell them to loss."
He alleges he sold the tallies for 740l. In view of which loss I advise

particular of five acres of ground (part of the land called the Fryars)
with a wharf (except the barge house thereon) and a brick tenement
thereon, being parcel of the manor of Richmond in Surrey in order to
a lease thereof to Edward Darrell for 61 years in reversion of the
term in being at the old rent of 4l. per an. and fine of 200l. |

Prefixing: report dated 1697 Oct. 5 from said Surveyor General
on said Darell's petition for same. The manor of Richmond was
formerly granted to Sir Edward Villiers for the life of him and his
son, now Earl of Jersey; and the said Sir Edward made a lease 1662
April 25 of the above ground &c. to William Bolton, Alderman of
London who had built the said brick tenement; viz. at the rent of
4l. per an., which rent is now payable to the King as the Sir Edward
Villiers surrendered the said manor to the late King James.
According to Sir Charles Harbord's survey in 1660 Oct. the said
tenement was then newly built and the premises were worth 12l.
per an. The greatest part of this ground is now made use of for
gardens and other accommodations to the petitioner's house which
fronts the street near Richmond Green. A considerable part of
the land is wharfed against the Thames with stone which is
absolutely necessary to be kept up, which repairs will be very chargeable. The house is very slightly built and the walls cracked from

The Treasury Lords to the Lords Justices of Ireland. We have
laid before the King your letter of June 24 last with the papers
relating to the payment of 1124l. 3s. 3d. to Lawrence Stanyon as
by the King's letter of the 8th of that month supra p. 356. The King
is satisfied that the said sum is due to the late Farmers of the Revenue
of Ireland. This payment imports only the rectifying a mistake
in their accounts and is not intended to be drawn into consequence
so as to encourage any further demands from them. We believe
