1694. April 1. Establishment under the royal sign manual for persons as follows as additional to the Four Foot Companies to be employed in our Province of New York in America; to be paid out of the moneys appointed for the pay of our Land Forces within our Kingdom of England: the King being informed that there will accrue a surplusage of 2040l. 7s. 0d. or thereabouts at the rate of 30 per cent [on the Establishment of the said Four Companies] by the difference of money or value of money current in our said Province.
The said additional items to be as follows, viz: a Chaplain for the said Four Companies at 6s. 8d. a day; a chirurgeon at 5s. 6d. a day; a storekeeper, armourer, master gunner and two matrosses for the garrison there at 2s. a day each: the whole charge amounting to 349l. 15s. 10d. per an.: and the Commander in Chief of the said Province is hereby to pay them out of said surplusage [and to pay same] in the current money of said Province and not otherwise: and [to apply] the 1690l. 11s. 2d. balance of the said surplusage to the contingent use of the said Companies and [to] the fortifications at said Province, giving a constant account of his proceedings therein to the Commissioners for Trade.
Appending: the said Establishment for the said Four Companies in New York:
Each Company: a captain 8s. a day; two Lieutenants each 4s.: three Sergeants each 1s. 6d.; three Corporals each 1s.; two drummers each 1s.; 100 privates each 8d.: total per Company 4l. 12s. 2d. a day or 1,682l. 0s. 10d. per an.: total for three Companies more 5,046 2s. 6d.: an adjutant for the four Companies 4s. a day or 73l. per an.: total Establishment 6,081l. 3s. 4d.
