(a) Estimate of the charge of 600 horse, 600 Dragoons and 4,800 foot to be taken into the service of Great Britain from the King of Sweden as Landgrave of Hesse Cassel from 1740, November 9 (to which time the annual subsidy of 250,000 crowns was last paid) to 1741, April 1 (when it is deemed these forces will be taken into British pay), and from said April 1st, if then taken into British pay, to the 25th December following. (Total charge of pay, &c., 154,799l. 5s. 1d. sterling.) In duplicate 1 and 1 pages.
(b) Same of same of 1,000 horse and 5,000 foot to be similarly taken into the service of Great Britain from the King of Denmark, computed as above from 1740, Decr. 3 (to which time same was last paid) to 1741, April 1, when it is deemed that these forces will be taken into British pay) and so to Dec. 25 as above. Order for the issue out of the Civil List revenues of 7,235l. 6s. 5¼d. to the Paymaster of the Works to clear the debt in that office for 1740, Michaelmas quarter.
A memorial read in the name of Alexander Ridley, commander of a Custom House sloop at Dover, for reimbursement of 39l. 14s. 4d., his charges in seizing a Portuguese ship laden with Spanish wines, which, on the application of the Portuguese envoy, was ordered to be discharged, all proceedings in the Admiralty Court for condemning said wines being stopped. Order for a warrant for said charges as reasonable: to be paid by the Receiver General of Customs.
Mr. Lowther to pay 25l. out of the King's money in his hands for the subsistence and funeral expenses of the late Mrs. Richards.
Order for the issue out of the loans on land tax, 1741, of 5,000l. to the Treasurer of the Navy on the head of wear and tear, as by his memorial: and 5,000l. on the head of wages, to pay bills of exchange drawn on the Sick and Wounded Office.

50. Warrant under the royal sign manual, countersigned by the Lords of the Treasury, to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, made in consideration of the said Lord Lieutenant's letter of the 7th instant to the Treasury, which represented that by a clause of the royal letter of 1740, April 2 (directing all warrant men to be taken off the muster and pat on the establishment) there is a clause by which it is apprehended that the usual method of mustering the forces in Ireland is altered in such manner that the power of removing respites is become doubtful, and therefore desiring that the said muster may be made in the same manner as before the said royal letter. Therefore ordered that the said musters in Ireland shall be put on the old footing, and taken in such manner as they have been usually and customarily.

A petition from the Commissioners for building Westminster Bridge read for a grant of some crown estates, and an abatement in the price thereof set by the Surveyor General. Their Lordships cannot agree to any abatement, but order the Surveyor General's report to be looked out and laid before them at their next meeting.
“My Lords on reading a letter from the Board of Ordnance, dated 28th March 1741, order the usual warrant to be prepared for the chests of arms therein mentioned, which are arrived from Holland, to be lodged in the King's stores, and are of opinion this method ought to be continued, and not a General Warrant given to the Commissioners of the Customs for all arms which shall be imported from thence for his Mat's service.”

Warrant under the royal sign manual, countersigned by the Lords of the Treasury, to the Duke of St. Albans, Constable of Windsor Castle, directing the observance of the order made by the late king, Geo. I. by his sign manual of 1715, August 9, whereby all the rules for managing the affairs of His Majesty's Works in general were to extend to the works in Windsor Castle, the said works being thereby incorporated in His Majesty's Works in general, and the artificers to be employed therein to be properly appointable by the Office of Works. In accordance herewith direct the Constable of said Castle to permit the workmen of the Board of Works to perform all works and repairs necessary without lett or hindrance.

Treasury warrant to the Master and officers of the Jewel Office for the execution of a royal warrant to the said Master for the provision severally for the Duke of Marlborough, the Duke of St. Albans, the Duke of Kingston and the Duke of Portland, lately elected Knights Companion of the Order of the Garter, of each a great Collar of the said Order according to the usual form and weight with an enamelled George appendant, as also a plain gold George and a quarter of blue velvet with gold letters, buckle and pendant as usual: all to an estimate of 240l. or thereabouts in each case severally.

Mr. Carkesse's letter to Mr. Scrope of the 15th instant read concerning Captain Ashe's behaviour about the Swedish ship seized at Poole as complained of by Monsr. Wasenbourg, the Swedish agent. Their Lordships are of opinion from the affidavits, &c., that the said Captain's behaviour was well justified, and that he should go on with the prosecution against the said ship and cargo, and be assisted therein by the Customs Commissioners, rather than answer the sum of 164l. or any part thereof demanded by the said claimants for damages.

57. Treasury warrant to the Board of Works to execute repairs as below at the estimate of 250l.
Prefixing:—Memorial to the Treasury from said Board dated 1741, April 9, concerning the condition of the engine at Windsor Castle. In Feb., 1739, had informed the Treasury that said engine had gone to ruin, so that the Castle was without water, and that the charge of making a new engine, repairing the sluices, making new a great part of the lead main to the Castle, &c., would be 1,047l. “We have since caused the said engine and works about it to be re-examined, and find that it may be repaired for the present, but not in a durable manner, for the sum of 250l.”

58. Messrs. Tufnell and Jelfe, contractors for the building of Westminster Bridge, to Sir Robert Walpole, dated from Westminster. The Grove quarries at Portland, the only quarries that can serve the bridge, are stopped by Messrs. Bryer and Tizzard forbidding Mr. Tucker to work them. Mr. Tucker has a lease of the said quarries, which are in the King's lands, and says that although said Bryer and Tizard have obtained the place of Surveyor, Supervisor, Guardian and Director of all His Majesty's quarries, that does not empower them to raise stone in the Grove quarries, and that he will not suffer any persons to work there except for his use, and further that he always apprehended the King's quarries to be those in the commons or parish ground. Unless authority intervenes the dispute may not be decided for 4 months, and will draw on a total stop to Westminster Bridge at the finest season of the year, and thereby disappoint the impatience and great expectations of the whole town, and cause a great clamour among the Bridge Commissioners. 2 pages.

Treasury warrant to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular of several parcels of land and premises as below, and for ratal of same in order to the passing a grant of the inheritance thereof under the Great Seal to Sir Joseph Ayloffe, of Acton, Midd., and Thomas Lediard, of St. Margaret's, Westminster, in trust for the use of the Commissioners for building a Bridge at Westminster: all for a stipulated fine of 2,505l. 9s. 9d., &c.

Revell to Sir William Yonge, Secretary at War, submitting an account of 422l. 14s. 6d. for the expense of a new enclosure for the security of coals at Gibraltar, which the agents of said Revell have been lately obliged to begin building “in order to prevent their being exposed to waste and embezzlement; the office of Ordnance wanting the ground where the old Magazine stood to erect part of a ramp on near the South Port,” where the Governor also thought it improper to land and lodge the coals in time of war.

The memorial of the Commissary General of Minorca for an imprest of 500l. out of the revenues of said Island towards his losses by the advanced price of bread-corn on occasion of the scarcity there, to be transmitted to the Comptrollers of Army Accounts, who are to consult with the Governor or Lieutenant-Governor [of said Island] and to report the terms of the contract made for the amunition bread, and what may reasonably be done in the contractor's behalf.
The Duke of Newcastle's letters of the 25th instant concerning goat skins from Dunkirk seized on pretence of being the produce of Spain, although proved by the certificate to be the produce of France, to be transmitted to the Customs Commissioners for the proper inquiries therein, “and to let his Grace have their opinion what is fit to be done therein so as he may return an answer to Monsr. Buissy, minister here from the French King.”
“Read the Duke of Newcastle's letter, dated the 26th instant, inclosing an extract of Col. Gooch's letter from Jamaica, 7th January last, complaining of orders wanting for money and provisions: also an extract of Brigadier Gen. Wentworth's from thence, of the 20th do., proposing the fixing the Jamaica currency at 125l. per cent for the pay of the troops there,” so that the men may escape the inconveniencies of a fluctuating currency. Ordered to be transmitted to the Paymaster of the Forces, and to the remitters [of subsistence money] for their consideration and opinion.
Mr. Lowther is to pay out of the King's money in his hands 20l. to Richard Mason as His Majesty's free gift and royal bounty.
