Miscellaneous 1580–1581

Royal Letters.
[The early “Royal Letters” have been distributed amongst the general correspondence. The following have, however, been left in their former place.]
1580. End of June. 765. Mustafa Bey to the Queen.
On receiving your Majesty's gracious letter, I and your subject, William Harborne, took your letter to the Sultan to Ahmet Pasha, chief councillor and prefect of the Guard, to whom we also told your wishes by word of mouth. Shortly after, I gave him a Turkish translation thereof, and he sent both to the Sultan, then absent from the city. For two months I could get no answer, as the Pasha had fallen ill, but after his death, Mustafa Pasha, returning from the Persian war, was advanced to his place, and by the diligence and at the no small expence of the said Harborne, I received the privilege which I send herewith, a privilege which other Princes have been unable to obtain without an envoy and great charge. I pray your Majesty to send an envoy to secure the confirmation of a solemn treaty. Constantinople, 1580, end of June.
