To the abbot of Newry (de Viridiligno) in the diocese of Dromore, and Peter Maguibrin and John Macgillabuidi, canons of Dromore. Mandate to collate and assign to Donald Macgynd, clerk, of the diocese of Dromore, who was lately dispensed by papal authority, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, a canonry and prebend, with cure, of the church of Dromore, to which canonry and prebend is annexed the parish church of St. Colman in the said diocese, whose value does not exceed 4 marks sterling, and which became void by the death without the Roman court of Nemeas Obyrrn; summoning and removing Patrick Oruanaga, priest, of the said diocese, who has unduly detained possession for more than a year but less than two years, without any right or canonical title, under pretext of an acceptance by him and of a provision made to him under pretext of papal letters not extending to a canonry and prebend of a cathedral church. Donald is hereby specially dispensed, on account of the said defect, to hold the said canonry and prebend, and resign them simply, or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Vite etc. (An. and G. de Elten. | An. xv. Residuum pro deo. Nono Kal. Februarii Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) |

1441 (fn. 2). 4 Non. Aug.Florence (f. 39d.) |
To the abbot of Iona (Hy Insula) and the prior of St. Columba's, Oruonsa, in the diocese of Sodor, and the archdeacon of Sodor. Mandate to collate and assign to John [son] of Alexander Kyenochson, clerk, of the diocese of Ross, who is in his twenty-third year, the parish church of Eyigh in the diocese of Sodor, of the patronage of laymen, value not exceeding 13 marks sterling, so long void by the death without the Roman court of William Moricii that its collation lapsed to the apostolic see; summoning and removing Martin Duncani, priest, of the said diocese, who without any canonical title took possession by his own temerity and has unduly detained it for more than four years but less than five; whether it became void as above, or by the death of Duncan Dominici without the said court, or in any other way. John is hereby specially dispensed, on account of the said defect, to hold it. Vite etc. (B. and Ja. de Vicentia. | B. xx. Pridie Non. Augusti Anno Undecimo. Valven. Correctum Pridie Idus Julii Anno Quarto-decimo, An. de Adria.) |
7 Kal. Aug. Florence (f. 98.) |
To the abbot of St. Mary's, Monasteranenagh (de Magyo), in the diocese of Limerick. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Gerald, son of Philip de Geraldinis, clerk, of the diocese of Limerick, that Cornelius Ohymur, canon of Limerick, has often gone about armed, has committed perjury, and has dilapidated goods of the canonry and prebend of Kyllidy in Limerick), if Gerald, who is by both parents of noble race, will accuse Cornelius etc. as usual, to summon Cornelius, and if he find the above or enough thereof to be true, to deprive Cornelius, and in that event to collate and assign the said canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, to Gerald, if found fit; whether they become void by such deprivation, or be void by the death of John son of Thomas de Geraldinis, or by the resignation of Maurice Yconalle, priest, both without the Roman court, or in any other way. Dignum arbitramur. (An. and Ja. Goyer. | An. xx. Terciodecimo Kal. Octobris Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) [See Cal. Lett. VIII, pp. 413, 512.] |
1441. 19 Kal. Jan.Florence (f. 130.) |
To Rory (Ruadrico) Omochan, canon of Elphin. Mandate to collate and assign to Cornelius Macealay, clerk, of the diocese of Achonry, who was lately dispensed by authority of the ordinary as the son of unmarried parents to be promoted to minor orders and hold a benefice without cure, a canonry of Achonry and the prebend of Killnathruid, value not exceeding 4 marks sterling, void because Philip Ocluayn, [now] a friar of the house of Rosserch of the third order of St. Francis called the order of Penitence in the diocese of Killala, entered the said house and made his profession therein; notwithstanding that the present pope lately ordered provision to be made him of a benefice with or without cure in the gift of the bishop and chapter etc. of Achonry, and dispensed him to hold such benefice with cure. He is hereby specially dispensed to hold the said canonry and prebend. Dignum etc. (An. and Ja. Goyer. | An. xx. Decimoseptimo Kal. Januarii Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) |
Prid. Kal. June. Florence (f. 184d.) |
To the abbots of Tracton (de Albotractu) and Gill abbey (de Anntro [sic] Sancti Fynnbarri), in the diocese of Cork, and the official of Cork. Mandate—the pope having been informed by Dermit Ouchanty, clerk, of the diocese of Cork, that Odo Omachamna, canon of Cork, has committed simony and perjury, is a notorious (noturnus, rectius notorius) fornicator, and is disgraced (pernotatus) in those parts by many other vices and excesses [not here named]—if Dermit, who lately, without mentioning his defect as the son of unmarried parents, had himself made a clerk, will accuse Odo etc. as usual, to summon Odo, and if they find the above or enough thereof to be true, to deprive him of his canonry of the said church and prebend of Drumdaliag, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, and in that event to collate and assign them to Dermit; whether they become void by such deprivation, or be void by the resignation of the said Odo without the Roman court, or because the late Renaldus Omurhule held together them and another canonry and prebend of the said church for more than a year without any dispensation. Dermit is hereby dispensed to act as a clerk and to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold the said canonry and prebend, and therewith any other benefice with or without cure, even if a canonry and prebend, dignity etc. or a parish church or perpetual vicarage, and to resign, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases and hold instead two other compatible benefices. Vite etc. (An. and G. de Elten. | An. xxxii. Decimoctavo Kali Julii Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) |
7 Id. Oct. Florence (f. 196.) |
To the archbishop of Tuam, the bishop of Valva and Philip Odubuychayn, canon of Ardfert. Mandate to collate and assign to John Stak, canon of Limerick (who has for several years studied canon and civil law, and is of noble and honourable parentage, being the son of a deacon and an unmarried woman of baronial race (fn. 3), and who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of his said defect of birth to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold any compatible benefices with and without cure, of any number and kind, even if canonries and prebends, dignities etc. and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased) a canonry of Tuam and the prebend of the small (fn. 4) churches of Conmacniculi and Conmacnimara, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling, void because John, [now] archbishop of Tuam, then a secular clerk, made his profession as an Augustinian canon; notwithstanding that he holds a canonry of Limerick and the prebend of Effyng, and that provision was lately ordered by papal authority to be made to him of the archdeaconry of Limerick, a non-major non-elective dignity with cure, and of the rectory or plebania of the parish church of Dwngarwan in the diocese of Lismore, of the patronage of laymen, value not exceeding 15, 60 and 100 marks sterling respectively, and that the present pope lately dispensed him to hold the said archdeaconry and any other one benefice, or otherwise any two benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if dignities etc. and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. Vite etc. (An. and Ja. Goier. | An. xxvi. Sexto Kal. Novembris Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) |

1436[–7]. 5 Id. March. Bologna (f. 203.) |
To Cornelius Osonglygli (rectius Olongsygh), canon of Ardfert. Collation and provision to him (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all, even (fn. 5) holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure) by these presents (which the pope wills to have force as if granted under the date 8 Kal. May anno 1 [1431]) of a canonry of Ardfert; with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend and dignity etc. thereof and of a benefice with or without cure (even if a canonry and prebend, dignity etc. in a cathedral or collegiate church, value not exceeding 25 marks sterling if with cure or a dignity or personatus, or 18 if not) in the gift of the bishop and the dean etc. and chapter etc. of Limerick; notwithstanding that provision was lately ordered to be made to him by papal authority of the parish church of Raythrorayn (sic) in the diocese of Limerick, value not exceeding 12 marks, of which he is not in possession. He is hereby dispensed on account of the said defect to receive and hold such canonry and prebend, dignity etc. or reserved benefice, and is to resign the said parish church or all right in or to it, etc. Vite etc. |
---|---|
1436[–7]. | Concurrent mandate (here with the somewhat better spelling 'Olongsigly' (fn. 6) ) to the bishop of Valva, the abbot of St. Mary's, Monasteranenagh (de Magio), in the diocese of Limerick, and the official of Limerick. Vite etc. (B. and Ja. Goier. | B. vi. Residuum gratis pro [deo]. Quartodecimo Kal. Octobris Anno Undecimo. Valven.) [4¾ pp. The letter is cancelled, with note in the margin at the beginning: Cassata quia per errorem fuit registrata in quaterno temporis dissimili (sic), B. Valven. The letter ought therefore to occur under the seventh year, but does not appear in the extant registers of that year analysed in vol. viii of the present Calendar.] |

De Dignitatibus [Vacantibus].
1441. 14 Kal. June.Florence (f. 245d.) |
To Denis Odubgilla, perpetual vicar of Kynmara in the diocese of Kilmacduagh. Reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, who was lately dispensed by papal authority, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, of the deanery of Kilmacduagh, a major elective dignity with cure, whose fruits etc. (from which the dean has to pay a yearly pension to two priests or chaplains) do not exceed a yearly value of 12 marks sterling, about to become void by the promotion, recently made by the pope [see above, p. 156], of Denis (fn. 7), elect of Kilmacduagh, to that church, and by his coming consecration; notwithstanding the said defect and his holding the said vicarage, value not exceeding 8 marks, with which he is hereby specially dispensed to hold the said archdeaconry for life. Vite etc. |
---|---|
Concurrent mandate to the bishop of Valva, and the treasurer and William Ocorcrayn, canon, of Kilmacduagh. Vite etc. (An. and G. de Elten, Ja. de Vicentia. | An. xxiiii. xxvi. Sexto Kal. Junii Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) | |
Prid. Non. May. Florence (f. 247d.) |
To the dean of Kilmacduagh. Mandate (seeing that the treasurership of the church of Kilmacduagh, a non-major non-elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 3 marks sterling, has been so long void by the resignation of Cornelius Ydonchuga made to and admitted by bishop John (fn. 8), that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see) to collate and assign it to Denis Maclaynd, canon of Kilmacduagh, a priest, who was lately dispensed by papal authority, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and thereafter to hold a canonry of the said church and the prebend of Killticbhuatayn, provision of which was ordered by papal authority to be made to him, and whom the pope hereby rehabilitates on account of his having taken the fruits of the said treasurership, which was assigned to him by the said bishop, not by the title of a perpetual benefice, but for serving a certain chapel contiguous to the said church (fn. 9); notwithstanding his holding the said canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 1 mark, and the said defect, on account of which he is hereby dispensed to hold the treasurership. Dignum etc. (B. and G. de Elten. | B. xxv. Sexto Kal. Junii Anno Undecimo. Valven.) |
8 Id. July. Florence (f. 261d.) |
To John Walsche, dean of Cork. Collation and provision to him, a priest, of the said deanery, a major dignity with cure, whose fruits etc., with which the below-named Miles (Milo) still interferes, do not exceed a yearly value of 12 marks sterling, which became void, and ipso facto reserved under the pope's late reservation of all major cathedral dignities, by Miles (Milo) Roche obtaining the rectory of Kyllgobayn in the diocese of Cork, after which, Jordan, bishop of Cork and Cloyne, having removed the said Miles (Milonem) from possession of the said deanery which he was still detaining, the chapter of Cork, to whom the election by ancient custom belongs, being perhaps ignorant of the said reservation, elected as dean the above John, then a canon of the same church, who, likewise ignorant, had the election confirmed by authority of the ordinary, and in virtue of the said election and confirmation, which have no force, obtained and still detains possession; whether it be void as above, or by the death of Richard Pellyne without the Roman court, or by the resignation of the said Miles (Milonis), or in any other way; and notwithstanding that John holds a canonry of Cork and the prebend which is said by some to be sacerdotal, of Cithirlaig, value not exceeding 2 marks. Vite etc. |
Concurrent mandate to the bishop of Valva, the abbot of Gill abbey (monasterii de Antro Sancti Fymbarri) in the diocese of Cork, and the official of Cork. Vite etc. (B. and G. de Elten, Ja. [de] Vicencia. | B. xiii. xv. Id. Julii Anno Undecimo. Valven.) | |
18 Kal. July. Florence (f. 267.) |
To the abbots of St. Mary's, Kylleseanyg, and Corcomroe (de Petra fertili), in the diocese of Kilfenora, and the official of Kilfenora. Mandate to collate and assign to Donatus Macmachuna, clerk, of the diocese of Kilfenora, who lately, without mention of his defect of birth as the son of un Married parents, had himself made a clerk, the archdeaconry of Kilfenora, a non-major dignity with cure, value not exceeding 16 marks sterling, still void, and reserved, because John Maclanchaga obtained and held it for more than a month without dispensation against 'Execrabilis' with his rectory of the canonically united parish churches of Killelleach and Huetforrayg alias Glac, in the said diocese; summoning and removing Florence Olochlaynd, priest, of the said diocese, who has unduly detained possession of it for more than four but less than five years, under pretext of letters of the present pope, surreptitiously obtained because they did not mention the number of years of the said John's detention, as required by a constitution of the pope (fn. 10). Donatus is hereby specially dispensed to act as a clerk and be promoted to all holy orders and hold the said archdeaconry. Vite etc. (An. and G. de Elten. | An. xxxv. Terciodecimo Kal. Augusti Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) [See Cal. Lett. VIII, pp. 548, 549.] |
7 Kal. Sept. Florence (f. 275.) |
To the abbots of Gedwert and Driborch and Melrose, in the diocese of Glasgow. Mandate—the pope having been informed by Walter Blar, clerk, of the diocese of St. Andrews, M.A., that William Croyser, archdeacon of Teviotdale (Thaudalie) in Glasgow, who was an acolyte of the pope, after the pope's transfer of the Council of Basel to Ferrara went to Basel and adhered to the pretended council there, wherefore he became ipso facto deprived and his said archdeaconry void—to summon the said William, and if they find that he incurred the said deprivation etc., to collate and assign the said archdeaconry, a non-major dignity with cure, value not exceeding 60l. sterling, whether it be void by such deprivation, or by the resignation of the said William, or in any other way, to Walter, who is by both parents of noble race. Nobilitas generis, litterarum etc. (An. and Bornius. | An. xxi. Quarto Kal. Octobris Anno Undecimo. de Adria.) |
14 Kal. Dec. Florence (f. 284d.) |
To the archdeacon of Annadown. Mandate to reserve to his gift, for collation to Richard de Burgo, clerk, of the diocese of Tuam (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure), and afterwards to collate and assign to him, the provostship of Tuam, a non-major elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 3 marks sterling, about to become void under the terms of the provision which the present pope recently made to Raymund Bremicham of the deanery of the same church, previously reserved. Richard is hereby specially dispensed, on account of the said defect, to hold it. Dignum etc. (B. and Pizolpassus. | B. xxvi. Undecimo Kal. Decembris Anno Undecimo. Valven.) [See above, p. 146.] |
