To Thomas Monelaw, priest, of the diocese of Ross [in Scotland]. Grant, as below. His recent petition contained that Gilbert Mardowel (recte Macdowel) and Donald Macullach have resigned for purpose of exchange their respective benefices, viz. the archdeaconry of Ross and a canonry of the same with the prebend of Kinchardin, the exchange being carried out by the ordinaries, and the value of the archdeaconry being greater than that of the canonry and prebend. The pope, therefore, hereby grants for life to the above Thomas, who alleges that he is a friend of the said Gilbert, a yearly pension of all the fruits of the corn tithes of the church of Edirdoull in the diocese of Ross, which is united to the said archdeaconry, the said fruits not exceeding in value 20l. of the money of Scotland, equal to about 6l. sterling, and not exceeding a third part of the fruits etc. of the archdeaconry; the said Donald having given his consent by his proctor, James Doles, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews. 9 Kal. Dec. (23 Nov.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 208v.) |
To the provost of Elphin, Cornelius Oscyngyn, a canon of Elphin, and the official of the same. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Nemeas Ocarneayn alias Magonel, clerk, of the diocese of Tuam, that Cornelius Onechean, prior of the monastery de Innocentia by Atylnayn (recte Athluayn), O.S.B., in the diocese of Elphin, allows the monks to have private property and improperly to go out of the monastery, (fn. 1) and that he himself retains private property, is a notorious fornicator, and does not reside in the monastery, but dwells outside it with his concubine and spends the night with her. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three, if Nemeas (who has been dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy as the son of a married man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders, and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he was made a clerk) will accuse Cornelius before them, to summon Cornelius, and, if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to cause Nemeas to be received as a monk of the said monastery and the regular habit to be given to him, and receive his profession, and thereupon to collate and assign to him the said priory, conventual and with cure, value 60 marks sterling. He is hereby dispensed on account of the said defect, etc. Cupientibus vitam. (In the margin: Novembris.) [4¼ pp.] |
