Mandate to make provision to Dermit Yhyffernam, a monk of the Cistercian monastery of St. Anastasius without the walls of Rome, who lately, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of an unmarried man and a married woman, had himself made a clerk, and who was afterwards, then being a secular clerk, dispensed by papal authority to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and who has made his profession of the said order, if he be found fit, of the Cistercian monastery of Holy Cross, Woctarlamand, in the diocese of Cashel, value not exceeding 20 marks sterling, void by the resignation of Odo Ograda, sometime abbot, to Patrick abbot of Inishlounaght (de Surio), of the same order, in the diocese of Lismore, who was deputed by its father abbot as visitor of the said monastery of Holy Cross, and admitted it by his ordinary authority; whether it be void as stated, or by the promotion of the said Odo to the monastery of Kilcooley (de Aruicampo) in the diocese of Ossory, made by the said ordinary authority, and by his having obtained possession of the rule and administration thereof, or by the death of Fergallus Yhyffernam, or in any other way. The pope hereby, notwithstanding the said defect etc., dispenses Dermit, and grants that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop, without prejudice to the archbishop of Cashel, to whom the said monastery of Holy Cross is by ordinary right subject. To the bishop of Ferns. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Balle, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary de Portu alias Dumbrothy in the diocese of Ferns, contained that on its voidance by the resignation of the late Henry Anger to Fergallus, abbot of Holy Cross and Patrick, abbot of Inishlounaght (de Surio), of the said order, in
the dioceses of Cashel and Lismore, who admitted it under special power from John, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Morimond (Morimondi) in the diocese of Langres (Lingonen.), deputed by the chapter-general of the order to be visitor and reformer-general of the order, the convent of St. Mary's, proceeding in due form to election, unanimously elected the above John Balle, then a monk of St. Mary's, in priest's orders, who consented to the election and had it confirmed by the said abbots of Holy Cross and Inishlounaght, and had himself blessed by Robert, bishop of Ferns. At the said petition, adding that for certain causes he doubts whether the said election and confirmation hold good, the pope, absolving hereby by the said John from all sentences of excommunication etc. as far only as regards the taking effect of these presents, orders the above bishop, if he find the facts to be as stated, and if he find John fit, to confirm his said election and confirmation, the value of the said monastery not exceeding 60 marks of silver. To the bishop of Leighlin. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Patrick Oleachlorr, a monk of the Cistercian monastery of Leix (de Lege dei) in the diocese of Leighlin, contained that on the voidance thereof by the resignation of Donald, [now] a monk, then abbot thereof, made to the abbot of Baltinglass (de Valle Salutis), of the said order, in the diocese of Dublin, the father abbot of Leix, who admitted it, the convent unanimously elected in due form the above Patrick, a professed monk of the order, in priest's orders, who consented to the election and had it confirmed by the said father abbot, and in virtue of the said election and confirmation obtained possession of the rule and administration, and has exercised them for several years, having been duly blessed. At the said petition, adding that he doubts whether for certain causes the election and confirmation hold good, and the said abbey being, as the pope has learned, still void as above, the pope hereby orders the above bishop, if he find Patrick fit, to make provision to him thereof, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling. He is thereafter to take to the above or other catholic bishop (antistes) the usual oath of fealty according to the form enclosed, which the said or such other bishop is to cause to be sent, by the said or such other bishop's letters patent sealed with the seal of the said or such other bishop (per tuas vel ipsius antistitis patentes litteras tuo vel ipsius sigillo munitas), to the pope. To the treasurer of Limerick. Mandate to make provision to Gerard David de Geraldinis, a monk of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary, Monastcranenagh (de Magio), in the diocese of Limerick, who is illegitimate, being the son of a married man and an unmarried woman of a great race of nobles, and who has made his profession of the said order, if found fit, of the said monastery, value not exceeding 60 marks sterling, void because Nicholas Treftan alias Lew, sometime abbot thereof, has in virtue of a provision made to him by authority of the ordinary, obtained possession of the rule and administration of the monastery of St. Mary Middleton (de Choro Benedicti), of the said order, in the diocese of Cloyne (Clonen.), although the said Nicholas, who is to be summoned and removed, has, after thus obtaining possession, intruded himself into the said monastery of Monasteranenagh without any canonical title, but of his own temerity, and with the support of lay power, and has for more than two years but less than three unduly detained possession; whether it be void as above, or by the death of Cornelius Yseancan, or in any other way. The above treasurer is to grant that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall thereafter receive from Gerard the usual oath of fealty according to the form enclosed, and shall send it to the pope by his letters patent sealed with his seal (per suas patentes litteras eius sigillo signatas), without prejudice to the bishop of Limerick, to whom the monastery is by ordinary right subject.
