CHARITIES FOR THE POOR.
An unknown donor gave 1 a. in Bridgwater before 1455. (fn. 1) The rent was distributed to the poor until 1789 when the vestry decided to use the money to provide clothing. (fn. 2) The land was later sold and the capital had been lost by 1869. (fn. 3) Catherine Clark (d. before 1724) gave £70 for labouring men and distributions were made during the 18th century. Jasper Porter by will dated 1746 gave money for bread but the charity had ceased by 1786, probably on the death of his son in 1781. Elizabeth Moon by will dated 1780 gave £200 for the poor. The Clark and Moon charities were lost between 1826 and 1869. (fn. 4) William Skynner by will dated 1829 gave £100 for the poor; and Sarah Wood by will proved 1891 provided for a bread distribution. The last two charities were still active in 1987. (fn. 5)
