CHARITIES FOR THE POOR.

An unknown donor, said in 1869 to have been named Hurley, gave a £1 rent charge to the poor. The money was used to buy bread at Christmas. (fn. 1) Jane Dowlin, by will of 1850, gave £275 to the poor and John Wheadon, by will proved 1866, gave £250 to the poor. Those charities, two of which were usually used to buy coal, formed the United Charities in 1909. (fn. 2) Mr. C. C. H. Cresswell, by will proved in 1907, gave over £465 stock for various purposes including the provision of coals and other necessaries for the poor. (fn. 3) The income from the United and Cresswell charities was distributed among the elderly in 1984. (fn. 4)
