NONCONFORMITY.

Two houses were licensed for use by Presbyterians in 1672, although the teacher was also said to be a Baptist, four houses were licensed for unspecified denominations in 1689, and one in 1707. There were 40 Presbyterian members in a single congregation in 1718, but the group had ceased to exist by 1729. (fn. 1) Further licences for unspecified congregations were issued in 1743 and 1799. (fn. 2) Congregationalists held cottage services c. 1866 and a chapel was built at Shellthorn, 1.5 km. north of Broomfield church, in 1870. (fn. 3) Services ceased c. 1949 and the small brick building was sold in 1963. (fn. 4) Bible Christians had evening preachings in the parish in 1868. (fn. 5)
