Text of the Somerset Domesday: Part 1

NOTE

The reader should bear in mind throughout that the date of the Domesday Survey is 1086; that King Edward, to whose time it refers as 'T. R. E.' i.e. 'tempore Regis Edwardi,' died January 5, 1066; that the 'hide' was the unit of assessment on which the (Dane) geld was paid; that its subdivisions were: the 'virgate,' one-quarter of the hide; the 'ferling' (farthing), one-quarter of the virgate; and the acre, of which 120 went to one hide. The 'demesne' was the lord's portion of the manor, the peasantry holding the rest under him.

The Rev. J. Collinson prefixed to his History of the County, published in 1791, a copy of the Exchequer Domesday, with an index giving the modern names of places. On the whole the index quite deserves the praise bestowed upon it by the Rev. R. W. Eyton in his Analysis and Digest of the Somerset Survey (according to the Exon codex) and of the Geld Inquest of 1084, 2 vols., 1880. In this latter work the manors are arranged under the Hundreds mainly by means of clues afforded by a close study of the Geld Inquest. The identifications include nearly every manor mentioned, and correct not a few of Collinson's suggestions. In 1899 the present writer printed (Som. Arch. Proc. XLV. ii. 51) an analysis of the Survey arranged to show the prevalence of manors, single or grouped, containing a unit or multiple of five hides. In working it out he availed himself of the immense mass of additional information contained in the Somerset Record Society's volumes, of articles in the Som. and Dors. Notes and Queries, as well as of the six-inch maps of the Ordnance Survey. In 1902, the Rev. T. W. Whale issued an analysis of the Exeter codex and the Geld Inquest. A number of the identifications in the following pages are based upon corrections made therein. But even now finality has not yet been reached. The sites of manors long since obsolete are brought to light quite unexpectedly, and references in early records, by enabling the descent of manors bearing the same name to be accurately distinguished, give clues which eventually carry back their history to Domesday.

THE KING'S LAND.

The king holds Summertone [Somerton]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 50 ploughs. In demesne there are 5 ploughs and 4 serfs, and (there are) 80 villeins and 28 bordars with 40 ploughs. 'There are 2 riding-horses, 9 swine and 500 sheep.' There are 100 acres of meadow, and pasture 1 league in length and half a league in breadth. Wood(land) 1 league long and 1 furlong broad.

There (is a borough) which is called Lanporth, 'Lanporda' [Langport], in which dwell 34 (fn. 1) burgesses paying 15 shillings, and there are 2 fisheries paying 10 shillings.

It (Somerton) pays yearly 79 pounds 10 shillings 7 pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

To this manor are added 3 estates (terræ) (fn. 2) which 3 thegns, Brisnod, Alvric and Sawin, held 'in parage (pariter)' T.R.E.; and they paid geld for 5½ hides. There are 7 villeins and 5 bordars with 4 ploughs. They pay 7 pounds 15 shillings. 'Brisnod held one of these, and paid geld for 4 hides, which 4 ploughs could plough. It is worth yearly 100 shillings. Alvric held one estate which paid geld for 1 hide; now Ogisius holds it and pays yearly 25 shillings. Sawin held half a hide T.R.E. and still holds it, and has there 1 plough and pays yearly 30 shillings in the king's ferm.'

From this manor (Somerton) has been taken away half a hide at Denesmodeswelle [ (fn. 3) ], which was (part) of the demesne ferm of King Edward. Alvred de Hispania holds it, and it is worth 10 shillings.

The king holds Cedre [Cheddar]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 20 ploughs. In demesne there are 3 ploughs and 2 serfs and 1 colibert, and (there are) 17 villeins and 20 bordars with 17 ploughs. And 7 rent-payers (gabulatores) pay 17 shillings.

In Alsebruge [Axbridge] 32 burgesses pay 20 shillings. There are 2 mills paying 12 shillings and 6 pence, and 3 fisheries paying 10 shillings. 'There are 6 beasts, 15 swine and 100 sheep.' There are 15 acres of meadow and pasture 1 league in length and as much in width. Wood(land) 2 leagues in length and half a league in width. It (Cheddar) pays yearly 21 pounds and 2½ pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

Of this manor Giso the bishop holds a member (called) Wetmore [Wedmore], which he held of King Edward. For it William the sheriff reckons in the king's ferm 12 pounds every year. 'The bishop held it of King Edward long before his death.'

From this same manor has been taken away half a virgate of land which was of the demesne ferm of King Edward. Robert de Otburgvile holds it, and it is worth 15 pence.

These 2 manors, Somerton and Cheddar, with their attached members (appenditiis) paid the ferm of one night T.R.E.

The king holds Nort Peret [North Petherton]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 30 ploughs. In demesne are 3 ploughs and (there are) 20 villeins, 19 bordars, 6 serfs, and 20 swineherds 'who pay 100 shillings' with 23 ploughs. 'And there are 2 beasts and 100 sheep.' And there is a mill which pays yearly 15 pence, and 100 acres of meadow, and 2 leagues of pasture paying 20 shillings. This manor pays 42 pounds 8 shillings 4 pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

The king holds Sudperet, 'Sutpetret' [South Petherton]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 28 ploughs. In demesne are 2 ploughs and 5 serfs and 22 coliberts, and (there are) 63 villeins and 15 bordars with 26 ploughs. 'There are 2 riding-horses, 1 cow, 12 swine and 63 sheep.' There is a mill paying yearly 20 shillings. There are 50 acres of meadow, and wood(land) 11 furlongs in length and 10 in width. It pays 42 pounds 8 shillings 4 pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

Of this manor Merlesuain held 2 hides in Stratone [Stratton] T.R.E.; it was thegnland. It now pays 60 shillings in the king's ferm 'and 24 sheep.' From the same manor has been taken half a hide. Norman holds it of Roger de Curcelle, and it is worth 16 shillings.

To this manor T.R.E. there was yearly paid from Cruche, 'Cruca' [Cricket St. Thomas] a customary due (consuetudo). This was 6 sheep with their lambs, and from each free man 1 bloom (bloma) of iron. Turstin holds (Cricket) of the Count of Mortain, but he has not paid the due since the count has had the land.

The king holds Churi [Curry Rivel]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 13 ploughs. In demesne are 3 ploughs and 5 serfs, and (there are) 20 villeins and 2 bordars with 10 ploughs. 'There are 1 riding-horse, 8 beasts, 11 swine and 64 sheep.' There are 40 acres of meadow, and wood(land) 2 leagues in length and 1 league in breadth. It pays 21 pounds 50 pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

From this manor has been taken away 1 virgate of land. Bretel holds it of the Count of Mortain. It is worth 10 shillings 8 pence.

These 3 manors, Nordperet and Sudperet and Churi, T.R.E. paid the ferm of one night with their customary dues.

The king holds Willetone [Williton] and Candetone [Cannington] and Carentone [Carhampton]. King Edward held them. They never paid geld, 'and were never hidated,' nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 100 ploughs. In demesne there are 11½ ploughs and 11 serfs and 30 coliberts, and (there are) 38 villeins and 50 bordars with 37½ ploughs. 'There are 2 riding-horses and 11 swine and 350 sheep.' There are 2 mills paying 5 shillings and 104 acres of meadow. The pasture is 5 leagues in length and 3 leagues in breadth. Wood(land) 4 leagues in length and 2½ leagues in breadth. It (the group of 3 manors) pays 105 pounds 16 shillings 6½ pence at 20 pence to the ounce. T.R.E. (it) (fn. 4) paid the ferm of one night.

To this manor of Welletone is added half a hide. (fn. 5) Saric held it T.R.E. for 2 manors and paid geld for half a hide. There is land for 5 ploughs. There 6 villeins and 4 bordars have 3 ploughs. There are 4 acres of meadow. The wood(land) is 4 furlongs in length and 1 furlong in breadth. It pays 31 shillings 8 pence.

To the same manor is added another half hide at Waistou [Westowe in Lydeard St. Lawrence] which Alwin held 'in parage (pariter)' T.R.E. and paid geld for half a hide. There is land for 1 plough. It pays 40 pence. To the said manor (fn. 6) has been added half a hide, and it pays 7 shillings to the king's ferm.

From Alvred's manor of Selvere [Monksilver] (fn. 7) has been added to this manor a customary due of 18 sheep every year. T.R.E. this did not belong to Welletone.

'fo. '90b'

The king holds Beiminstre, 'Betministra' [Bedminster]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 26 ploughs. In demesne there are 3 ploughs and 3 serfs, and (there are) 25 villeins and 22 bordars with 10 ploughs. 'There are 1 riding-horse and 9 beasts and 22 swine and 115 sheep.' There is a mill paying 5 shillings, and 34 acres of meadow. Wood(land) 2 leagues in length and 1 league in breadth. It pays 21 pounds and 2½ pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

The priest (presbiter) of this manor holds land for 1 plough, and it is worth 20 shillings. Of this manor 'Geoffrey' the Bishop of Coutances holds 112 acres of meadow and wood(land).

The king holds Frome [Frome]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 50 ploughs. In demesne there are 3 ploughs and 6 coliberts, and (there are) 31 villeins and 36 bordars with 40 ploughs. 'There are 24 swine and 93 sheep.' There are 3 mills paying 25 shillings, and a market (mercatum) paying 46 shillings and 8 pence. There are 30 acres of meadow and 50 acres of pasture. Wood(land) 1 league in length and the same in breadth. It pays 53 pounds and 5 pence at 20 pence to the ounce.

Of this manor the church of St. John of Frome holds 'in almoin' 8 ploughlands (car. terræ) as it did T.R.E. Reinbald is priest there. (fn. 8)

The king holds Brumetone, (fn. 9) 'Briuuetona' [Bruton]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 50 ploughs. In demesne there are 3 ploughs and 5 serfs and 4 coliberts, and (there are) 28 villeins and 26 bordars with 18 ploughs. There are 5 burgesses and 1 swineherd 'who pays 5 swine every year. There are 80 sheep and 13 goats.' There are 6 mills paying 20 shillings, and 38 acres of meadow and 150 acres of pasture. Wood(land) 5 leagues in length and 1 league in breadth. It pays 53 pounds and 5 pence of 20 pence to the ounce.

This manor with the above (named) Frome T.R.E. paid the ferm of one night.

From this manor have been taken away 9 acres 'which were in the above named manor T.R.E.' which Bretel holds of the Count of Mortain 'in Retlis' [Redlynch], and they are worth 18 pence.

From this manor has been taken away half a hide in Cilemetone [Kilmington]. Serlo de Burci holds it, and it is worth 10 shillings. They were part of the demesne ferm 'of the king in Briuueton [Bruton] T.R.E.'

From the same manor has been taken away 1 hide, 'which was (jacebat) there T.R.E.'

Gozelin 'de Rivaria' holds it of Robert Fitz Girold. There is land for 3 ploughs.

It was worth 'when Robert received it' 40 shillings, now 20 shillings.

The king holds Mileburne [Milborne Port]. King Edward held it. It never paid geld, nor is it known how many hides are there. There is land for 50 ploughs. In demesne are 4 ploughs and 5 serfs, and (there are) 70 villeins and 18 bordars with 65 (fn. 10) ploughs. 'There are 2 riding-horses and 22 swine and 153 sheep.' There are 6 mills paying 77 shillings and 6 pence, and 170 acres of meadow. Wood(land) 2 leagues in length and 9 furlongs broad. Pasture 4 furlongs long and 2 furlongs broad, and 1 league of moor (mora).

In this manor are 56 burgesses with a market paying 60 shillings 'in the king's ferm.'

In Givelcestre, 'Guilecestre' [Ilchester] are 107 burgesses paying 20 shillings. A market with its attached members (appenditiis) pays 11 pounds.

The whole of Meleburne with the aforesaid attached members pays 80 pounds of white silver less 9 shillings and 5 pence. T.R.E. it paid one half and one quarter of the ferm of one night.

Reinbald (fn. 11) holds the church of S. John with 1 hide. There he has 1 plough. It is worth 30 shillings.

THE KING'S LAND, WHICH EARL GODWIN and his sons HELD IN SUMERSETA' (fn. 12)

The king holds Brunetone [King's Brompton]. Ghida held it T.R.E., and paid geld for 10 hides. There is land for 60 ploughs. Four (fn. 13) hides of it are in demesne, and there (are) 3 ploughs and 7 serfs; and (there are) 50 villeins and 17 bordars with 20 ploughs 'and 5 hides.' 'There are 15 swineherds who pay yearly 32 shillings.' There are 2 mills paying 3 shillings, and 60 acres of meadow. Pasture 3 leagues long and 1 league broad, and as much wood(land) in length and breadth. It pays 27 pounds 12 shillings 1 penny of white silver.

Of these 10 hides a priest holds 1 in almoin (elemosina) of the king. 'There is land for 2 ploughs.' There he has '3 virgates and' 1 plough and (there are) 4 villeins with 1 plough 'and one virgate.' 'There are 4 beasts, 9 swine, 30 sheep and 7 she-goats,' and 3 acres of meadow. It is worth 20 shillings.

Of this manor (fn. 14) the Count of Mortain holds 1 hide in Prestetune [Torrel's Preston in Milverton], which was part of the demesne ferm T.R.E. There is land for 4 ploughs; 2 ploughs are there. 'Hugh de Valletort holds it of the count, and has 1 plough and 3 virgates of land, and the villeins have 1 virgate and 1 plough.' It was and is worth 40 shillings.

From this manor has been taken away the third penny from Milverton which used to be paid T.R.E. there.

The king holds Dolvertune [Dulverton]. Earl Harold held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 2½ hides. There is land for 11 ploughs. Of this there is in demesne 1 hide and there are 2 ploughs and 6 serfs, an there are 17 villeins and 6 bordars with 3½ ploughs 'and one hide and one half.' 'There are 6 beasts and 30 sheep.' There (are) 3 acres of meadow. Pasture 1 league long and half a league broad, and as much wood(land). It pays 11 pounds 10 shillings of white silver.

To this manor have been added 2 hides of land less half a ferling. 13 (fn. 15) thegns held them 'in parage' (pariter) T.R.E. There is land for 10 ploughs. There are 8 villeins with 4 ploughs, and 3 acres of meadow, and pasture half a league long and 4 furlongs broad, wood(land) one league long and half a league broad. It is worth 64 shillings and 2 pence.

From this manor has been taken away a customary due (paid) from Brigeford [Brushford], a manor of the Count of Mortain. It was 24 sheep yearly which were delivered there T.R.E. Mauger keeps it back by direction of (per) the count.

The king holds Clive [Old Cleeve]. Earl Harold held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 4 hides and 1 virgate of land. There is land for 33 ploughs. Of this there is in demesne 1 hide and there (are) 3 ploughs and 4 serfs and (there are) 19 villeins and 9 bordars with 18 ploughs 'and the rest of the land.' 'There are 1 riding-horse and 14 swine and 300 wether sheep (berbices) and 50 she-goats.' There are 2 mills paying 54 pence, and 24 acres of meadow. Wood(land) 1 league long and half a league broad. It pays 23 pounds of white silver; 'and when William de Moione received it it paid as much.'

To this manor belonged, 'T.R.E.,' the third penny of the Burgherist of Carentone and Willetone and Cantetone and Nordpereth [Carhampton, Williton, Cannington, North Petherton].

The king holds Netelcumbe [Nettlecombe]. Godwin son of Harold (fn. 16) held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 2 hides and 3 virgates of land. There is land for 12 ploughs. Of this there is in demesne 1½ virgates where (are) 2 ploughs and 3 serfs, and (there are) 15 villeins and 4 bordars with 7 ploughs, 'and 1½ hides and half a virgate.' 'There is 1 riding-horse.' There are 6 acres of meadow and 100 acres of pasture and 50 acres of wood(land). It pays (fn. 17) pounds 12 shillings of white silver; 'and as much when W. received it.'

The king holds Capintone [Capton in Stogumber]. Earl (fn. 18) Harold held (it) (fn. 19) and paid geld for 1 hide. There is land for 5 ploughs. Of this half a hide is in demesne where (is) 1 plough and (there are) 5 villeins with 1 plough 'and half a hide.' 'There are 4 beasts and 50 sheep.' There (are) 8 acres of meadow and 20 acres of pasture and 10 acres of wood(land). It pays 46 shillings of white silver, 'and as much when W. received it.'

The king holds Langeford [Langford in Burrington]. Godwin son of 'Earl' Harold (fn. 20) held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 5 hides. There is land for 10 ploughs. Of this there are in demesne 1½ hides where (are) 1 plough and 4 serfs and (there are) 21 villeins and 4 bordars with 8 ploughs 'and 3½ hides.' 'There is 1 riding-horse and 3 beasts and 10 swine and 30 sheep and 18 she-goats.' There is a mill paying 7 shillings and 6 pence, and 8 acres of meadow and 100 acres of pasture and 30 acres of wood(land). It pays 4 pounds and 12 shillings 'and as much when W. (de Moione) received it.'

The king holds Winesford [Winsford]. Earl Tosti held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 3½ hides. There is land for 60 ploughs. Of this there is in demesne half a hide where (are) 2 ploughs and 9 serfs, and (there are) 38 villeins and 11 bordars (fn. 21) with 13 ploughs 'and the rest of the land.' 'There are 52 sheep.' There is a mill paying 6 pence, and 8 acres of meadow and 40 acres of wood(land). Pasture 4 leagues long and 2 leagues broad. It pays 10 pounds and 10 shillings of white silver.

To this manor has been added half a hide. 3 thegns held (it) in parage (pariter) T.R.E. and did customary service to the reeve (serviebant præposito per consuetudinem) (fn. 22) of the manor without paying any ferm (absque omni firma donante). (fn. 23) There is land for 4 ploughs. There (are) 3 villeins and 23 bordars. It pays 20 shillings 'and when W. de Moione received it, as much.'

The king holds Crice [Creech S. Michael]. Gunnild held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 10½ hides. There is land for 8 ploughs. Of this there are in demesne 6 hides where (are) 2 ploughs and 6 serfs, and (there are) 20 villeins and 10 bordars with 6 ploughs 'and 4½ hides.' 'There are 1 riding-horse and 10 beasts and 10 swine and 48 sheep.' There is 1 mill paying 8 pence, and 8 acres of meadow. Pasture 1 league long and as much broad. Wood(land) 1 furlong long and as much broad. It pays 9 pounds 4 shillings of white silver 'and when W. (de Moione) received it as much.' A fishery is there, but it does not belong to the ferm. (fn. 24)

The king holds Nortcuri [North Curry]. Earl Harold held it, and paid geld for 20 hides. There is land for 40 ploughs. Of this there are in demesne 5 hides, where (are) 5 ploughs and 18 serfs and 23 coliberts, and (there are) 100 villeins less 5 and 15 bordars with 30 ploughs 'and 11 hides.' 'There are 1 riding-horse and 20 beasts and 20 swine and 100 sheep.' There are 60 acres of meadow and 50 acres of wood(land). Pasture 2 leagues long and 1 league broad. To this manor belong 5 burgesses in Langporth, 'Lantporta' [Lang-port], paying 38 pence, and 18 serfs and 4 swine-herds and 2 cottars. The whole (manor) pays 23 pounds of white silver 'and when W. (de Moione) received it as much.' There is a fishery which does not belong to the ferm; (fn. 25) and 7 acres of vineyard.

Bishop Maurice holds the church of this manor with 3 hides of the same land. He has there 7 villeins and 11 bordars and 2 serfs with 4 ploughs and 18 acres of meadow and 5 acres of pasture and 12 acres of wood(land). It pays 60 shillings.

Of the same land of this manor Ansger 'Brito' holds 1 hide of the Count of Mortain. It is worth 20 shillings.

The king holds Cruche [Crewkerne]. Eddeva held it T.R.E. It did not pay geld, nor is it known how many hides are there (habentur). There is land for 40 ploughs. In demesne are 5 ploughs and 12 serfs and 26 coliberts, and (there are) 42 villeins and 45 bordars with 20 ploughs. 'There are 2 ridinghorses and 8 unbroken (indomitæ) mares and 9 beasts and 40 swine and 400 sheep and 64 she-goats.' There are 4 mills paying 40 shillings, and a market paying 4 pounds. There

From this manor has been taken away Estham [Eastham]. T.R.E. it belonged to the ferm of the manor and could not be separated from it. Turstin holds (it) of the Count of Mortain. It is worth 50 shillings 'and when the Count received it as much. Godwin the king's reeve (prepositus) held it in the ferm of Cruche, and paid geld for 2 hides. 2 ploughs could plough these (hides). Turstin has in demesne 2 ploughs and 10 bordars and 1 serf and 6 beasts and 11 swine and 45 sheep and 1 mill which pays yearly 12 shillings and 20 acres of wood(land) and 12 acres of meadow.'

The king holds Cungresberie [Congresbury]. Earl Harold held it T.R.E. and paid geld for 20 hides. There is land for 50 ploughs. Of this there are in demesne 5 hides where (are) 6 ploughs and 12 serfs, and (there are) 34 villeins and 34 bordars with 34 ploughs 'and 9½ hides.' 'There are 2 riding-horses and 20 beasts and 40 swine and 200 sheep and 40 she-goats.' There are 2 mills paying 17 shillings and 6 pence, and 250 acres of meadow. Pasture 2 leagues long and half a league broad. Wood(land) 2½ leagues long, half a league broad. It pays 28 pounds 15 shillings of white silver. 'And as much when W. the sheriff received it.'

Of the land of this manor 3 thegns, Alward, Ordric and Ordulf, hold 3 hides and 3 virgates of land 'as thegn-land.' (fn. 26) They held (it) T.R.E., nor could they be separated from the lord of the manor. There are in demesne 3 ploughs and 4 serfs, and (there are) 6 villeins and 17 bordars with 3½ ploughs. 'There are 12 beasts and 10 swine.' There (are) 20 acres of meadow and 30 acres of wood(land). Total value 60 shillings.

Bishop Maurice holds the church of this manor with half a hide. It is worth 20 shillings.

Of the same land of that manor Roger holds 10 hides in Stantone [Stanton Drew]. 'Ulward Wyte, (fn. 32) held it freely, T.R.E.' '10 ploughs could till this.' He has there in demesne '5½ hides and' 1 plough and (there are) 15 villeins and 13 bordars owning 7 ploughs and 4½ hides. 'There are 87 sheep.' Besides this (land) the bishop has in demesne land for 20 ploughs which never paid geld and there he has 13 ploughs. There (are) 80 villeins and 82 bordars and 70 serfs and 16 coliberts and 17 swineherds paying 7 pounds and 10 shillings. Between them all they have 60 ploughs 'and 37 hides.' There (are) 64 burgesses paying 32 shillings. 'There the bishop has 8 riding-horses and 30 beasts and 24 swine and 100 sheep.' There are 3 mills paying 100 shillings less 60 pence. The market pays 50 shillings, and from the mint (moneta) 50 shillings. There (are) 40 acres of meadow. Pasture 2 leagues long and 1 league wide. Wood(land) 1 league long and as much wide. The same bishop holds Bledone [Bleadon]. It was and is (appropriated) for the monks' table (de victu monachorum). T.R.E. it paid geld for 15 hides. There is land for 17 ploughs. THE LAND OF THE BISHOP OF SALISBURY

The Bishop of Salisbury, 'Osmund,' holds Seveberge [Seaborough]. Alward held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 1½ hides. There is land for 1½ ploughs. Nevertheless there are 2 ploughs and 2 villeins and 4 bordars and 2 serfs (fn. 56) 'and 7 beasts and 5 swine and 59 sheep. In demesne are 3 virgates and 1 plough, and the villeins have 3 virgates and 1 plough.' There is a moiety of a mill paying 10 pence, and 9 acres of meadow and 10 acres of wood(land). Pasture half a league long and half a furlong broad.

To this manor has been added another Seveberge [Seaborough]. Aluer held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 1½ hides. There are 2 ploughs with 1 villein and 5 bordars. 'In demesne are 3 virgates and 1 plough, and the villeins have 3 virgates and 1 plough. There are 4 swine and 58 sheep,' and a moiety of a mill paying 10 pence, and 9 acres of meadow and 10 acres of wood(land). Pasture half a league long and half a furlong broad.

These 2 estates (terræ) do not belong to the bishopric of Salisbury (non sunt de episcopatu). Bishop Osmund holds them for one manor and Walter 'Tirell' of him. It was and is worth 60 shillings. T.R.E. they belonged (jacuerunt in) to Cruche (fn. 57) [Crewkerne], a royal manor, and their tenants could not be separated from it, and they paid by custom in Cruche (fn. 57) 12 sheep with their lambs, and a 'bloom' (bloma) of iron from every free man.

The same bishop holds Contone [Chilcompton] and Walter 'Tirell holds it' of him. (fn. 58) Alward held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 5 hides. There is land for 3 ploughs. In demesne are 10 ploughs and 15 serfs, and (there are) 21 villeins and 42 bordars with 10 ploughs upon the land which does not pay geld. Of the land of this manor Roger holds of the abbot 1 hide 'of thegn-land which Ailuin held T.R.E. and could not be separated from the manor (mansione),' and there he has 1 plough with 1 serf and 1 bordar. There are 10 acres of meadow and 6 acres of wood(land). It is worth 10 shillings. The Count of Mortain gave this manor to the abbot in exchange for Tutenelle,' 'Tittenelle' [Tintinhull].

Harding holds of the abbot Crenemelle [Cranmore]. He likewise (similiter) held (it) T.R.E., and paid geld for 12 hides. There is land for 10 ploughs. There is a mill paying 30 pence, and 50 acres of meadow and 60 acres of pasture and 100 acres of wood(land). It is worth 4 pounds. This land cannot be separated from the church.

The church itself holds Brentmerse [Brent]. T.R.E. 'Alnod the abbot held it and' it paid geld for 20 hides. There is land for 30 ploughs. Of this (land) 4 hides are in demesne where are 8 ploughs and 5 serfs and (there are) 50 villeins and 47 bordars with 16 ploughs 'and 11 hides' and 20 acres of meadow. Of these 20 hides Roger 'de Curcella' holds of the abbot 1 hide. Ralph 'de Cuntevill' (holds) 5 virgates. Alfric 'son of Euerwacre' (holds) 5 virgates. Godvin 'the priest' (holds) 1½ hides. They (fn. 145) who held them of the abbot T.R.E. could not be separated from the church. Walcin '(de) Duaco' holds of the abbot Lodenwrde (fn. 147) [Edingworth in East Brent]. A thegn held (it) T.R.E., nor could he be separated from the church, and he paid geld for 2 hides. There is land for 5 ploughs. In demesne are '1 hide and' 2 ploughs and 4 serfs and (there are) 4 villeins and 5 bordars and 5 cottars with 4 ploughs 'and 1 hide.'

'There are 1 riding-horse and 15 beasts and 5 swine and 5 sheep.' It is worth 40 shillings, 'and as much when he received it.'

Erneis holds or the abbot Dunehefde [Downhead]. Ulgar the monk held (it) T.R.E., (fn. 148) and paid geld for 3 hides. There is land for 5 ploughs. Of this (land) 2 hides are in demesne, and there (are) 3 ploughs with 5 villeins and 4 bordars 'who have 1 hide.' There (are) 5 acres of meadow. Pasture 5 furlongs long and 2 furlongs broad. Wood(land) half a league long and as much broad. It was and is worth 40 shillings.

Siward holds 3 virgates of land of the church of Glastingberie in a manor which is called Dinnitone [Dinnington]. It is worth 13 shillings and 2 pence.

Maurice the Bishop 'of London' holds the church of St. Andrew in Givelcestre [Ilchester] with 3 hides of land of the king. Brictric held this (estate) T.R.E. of the church of Glastingberie, nor could he be separated from it. 'It is worth 100 shillings, and the same when Maurice received it.'

The Bishop of Coutances holds of the king Hutone, Eleberie, Hetsecome and Stretton [Hutton, Elborough in Hutton, Ashcombe in Weston-super-Mare, and Stratton-on-the-Fosse]. These estates (terræ) were thegnland T.R.E., nor could they be separated from the church. They are worth 100 shillings, and more. From them the church has no dues (servitium).

The Count of Mortain holds these manors of the king, Stane, Stoca and Stoca, Dreicote [perhaps Stone in East Pennard, Stoke-under-Ham, and Draycote in Limington. (fn. 149) ] These estates (terræ) were thegnland in Glastingberie T.R.E., nor could they be separated from it. They are worth 14 pounds. 'Stane is worth 9 pounds, Stoca and Stoca 40 shillings, and Dregcota 40 shillings.'

The same count holds in the manor of Bodechelie [Butleigh] 2 furlongs of wood(land) in length and 1 furlong in breadth, which T.R.E. was in Glastingberie.

Roger de Corcelle has one manor (called) Limingtone [Limington] for which his father gave in exchange 5 hides which he held of the church of Glastingberie, nor could they be separated from it (inde). From these (hides) the church loses its due (servitium).

'The abbot of Glastonbury has 20 manors in demesne in Somerset containing (de) 194 hides and 3 virgates and 40 carucates exempt (from geld) and 23 hides (which have been) always exempt. And he has in them in demesne 75½ ploughs, and 347 villeins and 325 bordars and 108 serfs and 19 coliberts and 10 fishermen, who have 160 ploughs. These (manors) are worth 288 pounds 4 shillings. The knights of the church have in the same county 50 manors containing 159 hides, 64 ploughs in demesne, 219 villeins, 249 bordars, 101 serfs and 2 coliberts, who have 99½ ploughs and (these manors) are worth 146 pounds. In the same county English thegns hold 11 manors containing 31½ hides and 2 carucates of land which never paid geld; they have 12½ ploughs in demesne; and 21 villeins, 48 bordars and 16 serfs, who have 11 ploughs; and (these manors) are worth 20 pounds and 15 shillings. The church itself holds Ileminstre [Il minster]. Liward the abbot held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 20 hides. There is land for 20 ploughs. Of this (land) 9 hides and 1½ virgates are in demesne where are 3 ploughs and 10 serfs and (there are) 25 villeins and 22 bordars with 20 ploughs 'and 10½ hides and half a virgate.' 'There are 2 riding-horses and 27 beasts and 33 swine and 40 sheep.' There are 3 mills paying 22 shillings and 6 pence and 80 acres of meadow. Wood(land) 3 leagues long and 1½ leagues broad. There (is) a market paying 20 shillings.

Of this estate (terra) 2 thegns, 'Livric the priest and Wlward and now his son Edward holds half a hide,' held 1½ hides who could not be separated from the church.

It is worth in all 20 pounds. When the abbot died it was worth 26 pounds.

The church itself holds Ile [Ile Abbots]. Godric held (it) (fn. 151) T.R.E. and paid geld for 5 hides. There is land for 5 ploughs. There are 3 bordars holding 15 acres. The rest (alia) is in demesne, and there are 10 acres of meadow and 7 acres of pasture. Wood(land) 3 furlongs long and 1 furlong broad. The church itself holds Draitune [Drayton]. T.R.E. it paid geld for 20 hides. There is land for 15 ploughs. Of this (land) 11 hides and 2½ virgates of land are in demesne where are 6 ploughs and 10 serfs and (there are) 16 villeins and 14 bordars with 9 ploughs 'and 5 hides.' 'There are 3 riding-horses and 22 swine and 107 sheep.' There are 50 acres of meadow, and pasture 2 leagues long and 1 league broad. Wood(land) 2 leagues long and 1½ leagues broad.

Of these 20 hides Celric and Ulward hold 2 hides. Brictuin and Leving held them of the abbey T.R.E. nor could they be separated from it (inde). The Count of Mortain holds 2 hides in Aisselle [Ashill], and Roger de Corcelle holds 2 hides of the manor of Sutone [Long Sutton], and Ralph de Limesi holds 1 hide of the manor of Bosintone [Bossington in Selworthy]. These estates (terræ) belonged to jacebant in) Adelingi T.R.E. and could not be separated from it.

XI. THE LAND OF THE CHURCH OF ROME (fn. 155)

The church of the blessed Apostle Peter at Rome holds of the king Peritone [Puriton]. Eddid the queen held it T.R.E. Six hides are there, but it did not pay geld except for 5 hides. XII. THE LAND OF ST. STEPHEN OF CAEN

The church of St. Stephen of Caen holds of the king the church of Cruche [Crewkerne]. There are 10 hides. There is land for 13 ploughs. Alviet the priest holds of the king 1 hide in Sudperetone [South Petherton]. 'He held it in almoin of King Edward.' There is land for 1 plough which is there with 1 bordar and 1 serf. 'There are 8 beasts and 11 swine and 50 sheep.' There (are) 8 acres of meadow. It is worth 20 shillings.

To the church of Carentone [Carhampton] belong (jacent) 1½ hides. 'Peter the bishop held it in almoin T.R.E., and now it is in the king's hand.' There are in demesne 'half a hide and' 1½ ploughs, with a priest and 1 villein and 8 bordars 'with 1 hide and 1½ ploughs.' 'There is 1 riding-horse.' There are 40 acres of pasture and 15 acres of wood(land). It is worth 30 shillings. 'When the bishop died it was worth 40 shillings.'

To the church of 'St. Mary of' Peretune [North Petherton] belong (jacent) 3 virgates of land. There is land for 1 plough which is there. 'Rannulf the nephew of Peter after the bishop's death had the proceeds thence which the bishop had before. It is worth 20 shillings.'

Peter the bishop (of Chester) held these 2 churches. Now they are in the king's hand.

Liof holds 'Bera' (fn. 162) [Beere in Cannington] which he also held of King Edward and paid geld for 1 virgate of land. 'In demesne are 3 ferlings and half a plough, and the villeins have 1 ferling and half a plough.' There is land for 1 plough which is there with 1 serf and 2 bordars. 'There are 4 beasts and 5 swine and 5 sheep.' There is a mill paying 6 pence and 6 acres of meadow. It is worth 10 shillings.

Turstin holds Lege [Abbot's Leigh]. His father held (it) T.R.E. and paid geld for 1 hide. There is land for 1 plough. There are 2 bordars. 'There are 2 beasts and 6 swine.' It is worth 10 shillings.

Godwin holds half a hide in a manor which is called Ragiol [Ridgehill in Winford] of the king in almoin. 'T.R.E. he held the whole manor.' It is worth 3 shillings.

In the church of Curi [Curry Rivel] is half a hide. There a priest has I plough. It is worth 12 shillings.

Edith (Eddida) the nun (monialis) has in almoin of the king 12 acres of land. There she has 80 acres of wood(land) and pasture. 'There she has 4 beasts and 4 swine and 11 sheep.' It is worth 5 shillings.

Two nuns (nonnæ) hold of the king in almoin 2½ virgates of land in Honecote [Huntscott in Wootton Courtney], 'which 2 thegns held in parage (pariter)' T.R.E. There is land for 2 ploughs. There is I plough and 5 acres of meadow. It is worth 5 shillings. 'When they received it, 10 shillings.'

In 'the church of' Chenemeresdone, 'Chivemeresdone' [Kilmersdon] there is half a hide of land. It is worth 10 shillings. Peter the bishop held (it). Now it is in the king's hand.
