TWENTIETH CENTURY
In the course of the 20th century, Chelsea underwent the most dramatic shift in its history, from an area which, apart from the neighbourhood of Knightsbridge and Cadogan Square, was a largely unfashionable lower middle- and working-class one with low demand, in which artists and others with low or irregular incomes could rent homes, to one where, after the property boom of the 1980s, was one of the most expensive and desirable places to live in London.
