LIST OF MAPS AND OTHER TEXT FIGURES

Figures 1-8, 10, 13-18, 22 were drawn by Philip Moss (Illustration and Design, Hucclecote, Gloucester); the original drafts were prepared by N. M. Herbert and A. R. J. Jurica, based on O.S. Maps 6" (1880s edn.). Figures 11-12 are taken from a redrawing by G. L. Clissold of a map of the western part of the Forest area made in 1608: P.R.O., MR 879 (F 17/1). For permission to reproduce material in their possession thanks are offered to the Gloucestershire Record Office and to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Mass.).
