FOREWORD

This, the fifth and last volume of an Inventory of the archaeological sites in Northamptonshire, describes those sites and finds lying within the modern Borough of Northampton, together with the medieval churches surviving in the area.

Unlike the previous volumes which were prepared by the Royal Commission alone, this has been produced as a result of the co-operation between the Royal Commission and the staff of the Archaeological Unit of the Northampton Development Corporation. The existence of the Unit has meant that since 1970 a well-planned and executed programme of recording and excavation has been carried out in Northampton on a scale not previously equalled elsewhere in the county. The Commissioners accordingly are grateful for this collaboration which has enabled the survey of the archaeology of Northamptonshire by the Royal Commission to be concluded with a comprehensive study of Northampton.
