How to use the Index:—The Parishes are printed alphabetically in the Inventory which, so far as the Parishes are concerned, is in itself an index. The number or numbers in brackets after the name of the Parish refer to the number of the Monument within the Parish. Thus, Masons' Marks: Dedham (1), means that an instance of Masons' Marks will be found under Monument (1) in the Parish of Dedham. Look for Dedham in its alphabetical sequence in the volume and then to the monument numbered (1) and the reference will be found. Page references in Roman figures are to the Sectional Preface only.

For the general headings and the method used in compiling this Index readers are referred to the three Reports of the Index Committee printed in this and previous volumes on Essex. The recommendations of this Committee were considered and adopted by the Commission.
