CHALFORD
Buckland. (1) Hill-fort on Burhill.
(8 miles W. of Cirencester)
(1) Mound, possibly Roman (SO 89560384), N. of Middle Hill Farm, was totally carted away in 1866; original accounts refer to the find-place as 'Bisley Common'. Finds included: six Roman altars, four of them to Mars and two small ones uninscribed, a 2nd-century coin, Roman pottery, bones and 'unctuous animal matter'. Surviving objects are in Stroud Museum.
