BROOKTHORPE WITH WHADDON
(14 miles N.W. of Cirencester)
A scatter of Romano-British pottery of the 2nd and 3rd centuries is recorded from Court Farm, Whaddon (SO 837136). (fn. 1)
(1) Romano-British Villa (SO 833124), Brookthorpe Court, revealed during construction of the M5 motorway in 1969, lies in the vale on Lias clay about 140 ft. above O.D. A brook (channelled) flows 150 yds. to E.
Structures planned during 'rescue' excavation included limestone wall-footings with associated loose tesserae of blue Lias and sandstone roofing-tiles. Adjacent to the building was a possible paved courtyard; some 100 ft. distant were pilae lying between two walls.
Finds, in Gloucester City Museum, include samian and coarse wares, tegula fragments stamped Arveri, box tiles and fragments of painted plaster.
