Assistant Under Secretary 1858-70

In April 1858, when the Parliamentary Under Secretary was hard pressed by parliamentary business and the Permanent Under Secretary was in poor health, Murray, a Senior Clerk, was appointed to the temporary position of Assistant Under Secretary with a monthly allowance of £80 in addition to his salary. (fn. 1) Murray's appointment was made permanent in October 1858 at a salary of £1,200. (fn. 2) The salary was increased to £1,500 in 1859. (fn. 3)
