Private Secretary to First Lord and Lord High Admiral 1800-70

The office of Secretary or Private Secretary to the First Lord (or Lord High Admiral) was first included in the establishment in 1800 when a salary of £300 was made available for its holder. (fn. 1) In 1824 it was provided that, in those cases in which the Private Secretary was not in receipt of any other emolument from the crown, the salary should begin at £500 and rise by annual increments of £10 to £600. (fn. 2) No salary was paid to those Private Secretaries who were members of the House of Commons. (fn. 3)
