Gentlemen Porters at Carlton House 1812–1837

The terminology associated with the porters at Carlton House is confusing. The first gentleman, yeoman and groom porters at Carlton House were referred to, collectively, as gentlemen porters. From 1815 there was also a separate head gate porter. The Establishment of 19 Feb. 1812 lists a the first gentleman porter at Carlton House at £210, a yeoman at £170 and a groom at £35 per annum. By 1829 the three gentlemen porters made £285, £245 and £152, respectively. These offices were transferred to the main court in 1830, when their emoluments were settled at £250 for the first gentleman porter, £200 apiece for two yeomen and £150 for three grooms. In addition, four assistant porters made £125 apiece. (fn. 1)

The porters at Carlton House were appointed by the lord steward.
