Examiner and Deputy Examiner of Plays 1738-1837
The office of examiner of plays was created by statute in 1737 to implement the lord chamberlain's increased authority to license theatrical productions. (fn. 1) In the following year the lord chamberlain appointed an examiner and a deputy examiner with salaries of £400 and £200 respectively. (fn. 2) The office of deputy was abolished in 1782. (fn. 3)
