Pleading: William Medley, abbot of Thornton, amerced for many defaults. John Cokayn and his wife Joan, former wife of John Louthe, state that on 18 November 1461, in London, William Medley, abbot of Thornton, made a bond with them in £8, which they show in court, sealed with the common seal of the abbot and convent, payable at Michaelmas then next. On the same day and in the same place, by an indenture which they also present in court, sealed with the common seal of the abbot and convent, John and Joan demised at farm to the abbot and convent their manor called Thorpe Hall by Louth, with all lands, closes, pastures and other appurtenances, and the houses and closes called 'Roses croft' and a croft next to the water-mill there, excepting and reserving to John and Joan and their heirs the newly-built parlour and chamber there and the 'Draught chamber', to hold from the previous Michaelmas (1461) for 12 years, at an annual rent of £4, payable at Lady Day and Michaelmas in equal portions. By virtue of this, the abbot and convent were in possession and owed £4 6s 8d for this rent, namely 6s 8d outstanding from Michaelmas 1462 and £4 for the next year. Also, 11 December 1461, in London, by another sealed indenture which the plaintiffs show in court, the abbot acknowledged that he had bought from the plaintiffs various utensils called 'stuff of household' then within the said manor, to a value of £17 13s 4d, payable at the feast of the Purification then next (1462). Pleading: William de Rothewell, son and heir of John de Rothewell, states that whereas Thomas, formerly abbot of St Albans, and the convent of that house, were formerly seised in their demesne as of fee by right of their monastery of a messuage, 80 acres of land, 6 acres of meadow, 10 acres of wood and 35 acres of pasture with appurtenances lying at Portsoken in the parish of St Peter in St Albans, and thus seised, by a charter sealed with their common seal, dated in their chapter house on 20 December 1355, they granted these lands, amongst others, to a certain Alexander Conduyt and his wife Sarah and the heirs of Alexander's body. If they should die without heirs of Alexander's body, they granted that the property should remain first to the heirs of Sarah's body, and then to a certain William de Rothewell, clerk, for term of his life, and then to John [Conduyt], brother of Alexander, and his wife Joan, and the heirs of their bodies. If they should die without heirs, the property should remain to Richard de Walyngford and the heirs of his body, and then to the aforesaid John de Rothewell and the heirs of his body, and then to Robert Vyncent and his wife Margery and the heirs of Margery's body, then John de Bampton and the heirs of his body, then a certain Gunnore Broun of Rothewell and the heirs of ?her body, and then to John Hakoun and the heirs of his body. The said former abbot and convent then gave this chest containing this charter and other muniments relating to this property to Alexander and Sarah, to descend to the holders of the property as contained in the grant. By virtue of this Alexander and Sarah were seised of this property, Alexander as of fee tail and Sarah as of free tenement, and Alexander had possession of the chest. Alexander then died without heirs, as did various others, and the property and the documents descended to John de Rothewell. JR had issue WR (the plaintiff), and then died, by virtue of which the property descended to WR as son and heir. After the death of Alexander, the chest and charters came into the possession of William Stoughton in London on 14 November 1459, from whom WR ought to have delivery, but he refuses to hand this over, to the damage of WR of £100.
