785. Joice late the wife of Robert de Mortuo Mari.
Writ, on the complaint of Isabel daughter of the said Robert that whereas she was enfeoffed of the manor of Hunteber' by the said Joice who had the same of her own inheritance in her widowhood, and peacefully continued her seisin for a long time, the late escheator took the same into the king's hand after the death of the said Joice, by reason of the heir of the said Robert, who was in the king's wardship, and that William de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick, to whom the king committed the said wardship, detains the manor from the said Joice (sic), 7 Sept. 18 Edw. I.
[Devon.] Inq. taken at Buddelegh on Wednesday after St. Leonard, 18 Edw. I.
Huntebere. The manor was the inheritance of the said Joice, who in her widowhood enfeoffed the said Isabel of the same, and she continued peacefully her seisin thereof for three weeks, until the king's escheator took the manor into the king's hand immediately after the death of the said Joice, by reason of the heir of the said Robert. The said Joice was not seised in her demesne thereof as of fee, on the day she died. The said Earl detains the manor from the said Isabel to her manifest prejudice and disherison.
Writ of certiorari concerning the tenure and value of the abovesaid manor, 9 Dec. 19 Edw. I.

Huntebeare. The manor is held of Matthew son of John in socage, rendering 6d. yearly for all services.

786. William de Haselbech.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Alan la Zuche, son and heir of Roger la Zuche, deceased, who held of the king in chief, which Alan, on the day of St. Denis, 16 Edw. I., in the parts of Gascony, came to seek his inheritance as of full age, and whom the king has retained with him, that the escheator has taken into the king's hand the wardship of the lands which were of the said William, which ought to pertain to the said Alan, being held of him by knight's service, 4 Jan. 18 Edw. I.
[Northampton.] Inq. Wednesday the eve of the Purification, 18 Edw. I.
Yelvertoft alias. Jelvertoft. A messuage with garden and fishpond, ½ virgate and ⅓ of ½ virgate, and 10a. land, 3½a. and 5 feet meadow, 5 roods pasture, 6s. 6d. rent of assize, the advowson of the church, a court &c. and he has free bull and boar, and ought to grind without toll, and there are of rent of assize 2lb. pepper, 9 grana, and an apple, held of Sir Roger la Zuche by service of ⅓ knight's fee.
He died 6 April, 17 Edw. I. Thomas his son, aged 10, is his next heir.

787. Gilbert Coleman.
Writ to William de Sutton, keeper (custodi) of the king's manor of Estwode, to extend the lands of the said Gilbert in the hundred of Rocheford, and assign dower to Alice late his wife, who has taken oath not to marry without the king's licence, 17 May, 18 Edw. I.
Endorsed: That because it is contained in the verdict that Baldwin his son was jointly enfeoffed with the said Gilbert of the marsh called Sandflete, he (the said William) has not yet assigned dower there to the said Alice.
[Essex.] Extent. Thursday in Whitsun week, 18 Edw. I.
Hundred of Rocheford. A marsh called Standflete, containing 100a. arable, besides pasture and fishery in the fleets adjacent. But the said Gilbertenfeoffed John de Bemflet, chaplain, of the same, who afterwards enfeoffed the said Gilbert and Baldwin his son, to be held to them and the heirs of the said Gilbert, and they were so seised until the death of the said Gilbert.
Endorsed:—Extent of the marsh of Sanflete pertaining to the manor of Estwode.
Writ of ad plenium certiorari to the same, on the complaint of the aforesaid Baldwin that the said bailiff had taken into the king's hand the aforesaid marsh of which he had been enfeoffed (as abovesaid), 8 June, 18 Edw. I.

Sandflet Marsh. One Baldwin de Cacquell enfeoffed the said Gilbert of the said marsh to be held to him and his heirs, who long after enfeoffed John de Bemflet, chaplain, delivering him seisin by letters patent; and he continued peaceful seisin for eight days, taking eight cheeses of issue and fishing in the fleets; afterwards he enfeoffed the said Gilbert and Baldwin thereof as aforesaid.

788. Geoffrey de Scodland alias de Scolande.
Return from the escheator reciting a writ of 28 July, 18 Edw. I. requiring him to extend the lands &c. late of the said Geoffrey, who held of the king in chief, and deliver 10l. of land or rent to Alice the nurse of the king's son Edward, until the lawful age of the said Geoffrey's heir; whereupon, and because the jurors of an inquisition made by a writ de diem clausit extremum on the prosecution of one Richard de Scodland, have asserted that the wardship of the said lands, &c., by reason of the minority of Franco, son of Franco brother of the said Geoffrey, and heir of the said Geoffrey his uncle, who had no heir of himself, pertains to the king, he has taken the lands into the king's hands and sends the extents, but has delivered nothing to the said nurse, because of the king's mandate of which transcript is underwritten, viz.—
Writ, on the complaint of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England that the escheator under pretext of the Statute of Mortmain had taken into the king's hand the manor of Cathangre which the said Richard had demised to the said prior for five years only, requiring the escheator, having taken security from the prior, to give him possession of the manor, 19 Sept. 18 Edw. I.
Somerset. Inq. Friday before St. Calixtus the Pope, 18 Edw. I.
Exeton. A fourth part of a water-mill, pannage worth 12d. yearly, 34s. 5½d. rent of customers, works, pleas and perquisites, and pasture on the hills worth 2s. yearly.
Somerset. Extent made at Lamport Westovere on Monday before St, Luke, 18 Edw. I.
Catanger. The easement of two parts of the court, garden and dovecot, because Benedicta, late the wife of the said Geoffrey, is dowered of a third part of the said town, 18s. 8½d. rent of free men, 3s. 3d. rent and works of a customer, pleas &c. of court, 215a. arable and 26a. meadow in demesne, pasture worth 8s., and underwood worth 8s. yearly; from which are payable for rent to the abbot of Mochelnye 8d., and for two parts of 1 qr. each of wheat, beans, and barley, and 2 qrs. of oats, 7s. 1¾d.; and for land called La Blyndelonde, 6s. 8d.

789. William de Alba Marlia.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of John de Alba Marl[ia] of Stokes that the escheator had taken into the king's hand a knight's fee in Flente, the wardship whereof with the marriage of the heir of the said William pertained to the said John, 12 July, 18 Edw. I.
[Devon.] Inq. taken at Exeter on Tuesday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 18 Edw. I.
Tavy St. Mary. 6 marks and 8s. of land held of the honour of Hurberton, which is in the king's hand through the death of Roger de Vautort for default of an heir.
Flente. 1 knight's fee held of John de Alba Marl[ia] of Stok[es], but the marriage of the said William's heir does not pertain to the said John, but to Gundreda, late the wife of John Wyger, because the said William held of her a knight's fee in Sydenham, whereof his ancestors were first enfeoffed.
Writ of certiorari whether the wardship of the abovesaid lands in Tavy St. Mary with the marriage of the heir pertain to the king or not by reason of the honour of Hurberton, 22 Aug. 18 Edw. I.
[Devon.] Inq. Tuesday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 18 Edw. I.
The wardship of the lands in Tavy St. Mary pertains to the king by reason of the said honour, but the marriage of the heir to Gundreda late the wife of John Wyger as abovesaid.

790. Nicholas, Baron of Stafford.
Writ of certiorari super vero valore of the manor of Stafford, which by reason of the minority of the son and heir of the said Nicholas was taken into the king's hand, and is in the hand of William de Gerlande, the king's yeoman (valetti), by the king's grant, 27 July, 18 Edw. I.
Stafford. Extent made at Stalbrok in Dotinton on Friday after St. Denis, 18 Edw. I.
The castle near Stafford. The manor (extent given) including ½ carucate land at Bradeley, 4l. 13s. 4d. rent of the mills of Stafford, and fishery of the pond of Le Brodhe.

791. Walter de Trayli alias de Traylly.
Writ, 21 Nov. 18 Edw. I.
Bedford. Extent made at Bedford on Wednesday after the Epiphany, 18 Edw. I.
Chelwenton. 14s. 5d. and 10 capons rent of assize of free tenants, 7l. 6s. 1d. rent of customary tenants &c. held of the earl of Gloucester by service of ⅓ knight's fee, and there are due to Florus parson of Bletnesho 2d., and to Roger Abbot 1d.
John his son, aged 11 at the feast of the Epiphany in the said year, is his next heir.
[Bedford.] Extent, Sunday before St. Nicholas, 18 Edw. I. (defaced.)
Northyevel. A capital messuage, 50a. arable, 9a. meadow, 2a. pasture, rent of assize, pepper and capons, works &c. (extent given), 120a. wood with pasture enclosed, a windmill, pleas &c., and the advowson of the church, all held of the king in chief by service of one knight's fee.
Heir as above, aged 10 at the feast of the Epiphany, 17 Edw. I.
Bedford. Inq. made at Melcheburn on the day of St. Andrew, 18 Edw. I.
Yevilden. The said Walter enfeoffed Master Richard de Clifford of the manor with the advowson of the church, to him his heirs and assigns, who made fine with the earl of Gloucester for entry, because the manor was held of the earl in chief. Afterwards he enfeoffed the said Walter and Eleanor his wife of the same to them and the heirs of the said Walter, who were in peaceful seisin from the day of St. Laurence until the-day of St. Leonard, 17 Edw. I, on which day the said Walter died; and they made fine with the said earl for entry.
[Cambridge.] Inq. Monday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 18 Edw. I.
Queye. A capital messuage, 260a. arable, 9a. meadow, a dovecot, and a water-mill with fishery, held of the bishop of Ely in chief by service of 1 knight's fee; and 37s. rent of free tenants, 25s. 6d. rent of customers, 11s. 10d. works, pleas and perquisites &c. held of the king in chief doing 3s. 8d. for sheriff's aid, viz.—the said Walter and his heirs 5d., and the customers 3s. 3d.

Southyevel. A capital messuage, 160a. arable, 16a. meadow, 6a. pasture, 12l. rent of assize, pleas and perquisites, held by Sir Edmund Gacelyn by service of 1 knight's fee.

792. Avelina de Fortibus, Sometime Countess of Albemarle.
Writ to enquire what knights' fees the said Avelina held of the archbishopric of York, which are in the king's hand as is said, and where within the escheator's bailiwick recompense for them may be made to the greatest convenience of the archbishop and least damage of the king, 20 May, 18 Edw. I.
[York.] Inq. made at Hedon on Sunday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 18 Edw. I.
Holdernesse. 2 knights' fees were held by the said Avelina and her ancestors of the said archbishopric by homage and foreign service, viz.—scutage when it shall happen, whereof in, Esthalsham and Westhalsam. 1 knight's fee containing 8 carucates of land, each of which contains 12 bovates.
Bourton Conestable, Neweton Conestable and Tharlesthorp. 1 knight's fee containing 8 carucates, each of which contains 8 bovates. And Sir Simon Constabul holds 1½ fee, and John le Ward of Esthalsam ½ fee (thereof).
The jury know not where convenient recompense can be made for these fees.
[York.] Inq. made at the cross of Stodley outside Ripon on Friday after St. Wilfrid Archbishop of York, 18 Edw. I.
One knight's fee was held by the said Avelina of the said archbishop, which is in the king's hand through her death, and held of the king by William de Vescy, and divers tenants hold that fee of him in divers places, viz.—
Nidd. The manor (extent given), whereof a third part is held by Joan de Stotevile in dower, held by John Wak' by knight's service.
Westwyk'. The manor (extent given) held by William de Stopham by knight's service.
Neuton. The manor (extent given) similarly held by the same William.
Kelinghale. 1 carucate land (extent given with names of divers tenants) similarly held by the same William.
Hewyk ad pontem. 2 carucates land held by William de Hydewyn of John Marmyun by knight's service and suit at his court at Ripon, which the said John holds of William de Vescy by knight's service; whereof he holds a capital messuage, 10 bovates land, and part of a water-mill in demesne, and divers lands are held of him by divers tenants (names given).
The whole of the aforesaid fee was held by the said Avelina of the said archbishop immediately, doing the services pertaining to the fee, and suit at his court of Rypon. The jury know not how recompense may be made unless by consideration of Thomas de Normanvill (the escheator).
Endorsed:—Thomas de Normanvill is commanded to enquire and certify the king where recompense may be made to the least damage of the king.

793. _ The Wife of Rees (Resi) ab Maylgun.
Writ (missing).
[Cardigan.] Extent made at Caron before the abbot of Whiteland (Alba Landa) and Peter Lof, of land in Pennarth which she had of the king's gift for life, Tuesday before the Purification, 18 Edw. I.
Pennarth. There is no manor there nor site of a manor, nor demesne lands. There are 1¼ Westwa held by tenants rendering 66s. 8d. rent of assize, and a water-mill. And the tenants pay 13s. 4d. yearly for food (potura) of one serjeant by the custom of the country, and the same for one groom and horse for the half year. Leyrwytes of women are worth 5s., and pannage 2s., and the tenants ought to carry timber for maintaining the lords' castle, and go in the king's army when summoned, as others of the country do.

794. Robert de Wauton, deceased.
Writ of certiorari super vero valore to Richard de Holebrok', keeper of the king's forest between the bridges of Oxford and Staunford, concerning the bailiwick called Bolehax in the forest of Rokyngham which the said Robert had of the king's grant for life, 28 July, 18 Edw. I.
[Northampton.] Extent made at Stanerne on Thursday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 18 Edw. I.
Bolehax. The bailiwick was held by the said Robert as abovesaid, and he had 4 foresters on foot whom he could remove at will in full swainmote; he ought also to have the keepership of the wood of Fermes, which is in the hand of the queen the king's mother, whenever it shall fall in, as was contained in his charter of grant, to which pertains one forester. Nothing certain pertains to the bailiwick, except that he and his foresters live upon the country.

795. Henry son And Heir of John de Holewelle, an idiot.
Writ to the sheriff of Essex, to extend the lands &c. alienated by the said Henry, who was found by inquisition to be an idiot, 12 May, 18 Edw. I.
Essex; Hundred of Rochford. Extent of lands &c. alienated, Saturday the eve of Holy Trinity.
Barling'. 20s. rent, tenure unspecified, were held by the said Henry, and Juliana his mother is dowered of 6s. 8d. of the same. He had no other lands &c. in the hundred.
Essex; Hundred of Barstable. Extent of lands &c. alienated (undated).
Neveden. 8s. rent and the advowson of the church, tenure unspecified, were held by the said Henry. He held no other lands in the hundred.

796. John Son of John de London.
Writ de plenius inquirendo to Thomas de Normanvill, escheator beyond Trent, because in an inquisition lately made of the lands &c. of the said John, who held in chief of the heir of Robert de Everingham, who is in the king's wardship, by knight's service, as is said, no mention is made whether the said Robert or any of his ancestors ever had the wardship of the lands &c. of the said John or his ancestors, nor whether Adam de Everingham, father of the said Robert, who granted the wardship of the said John's lands whilst under age to John de Vilers, and who immediately after that grant, and long before the lawful age of the said John son of John, resumed that wardship and delivered it to the said John son of John who was within age, did thus deliver it, because it did not pertain to him of right, 5 Feb. 18 Edw. I.
[York.] Inq. Thursday after St. Mark, 18 Edw. I.
Neither the said Robert nor any of his ancestors ever had the aforesaid wardship, except that the said Adam seized the same on the death of John de London, granted it to John de Vylers, who held it for three years and more, until the said Adam resumed and delivered it to the said John son of John seven years before his lawful age, because it did not pertain to him of right, nor in any other manner.

797. Hamo Hauteyn.
Writ of certiorari to the sheriff of Cambridge, on the complaint of William de Chaddesworth and Alice his wife, that whereas the said Hamo granted to the said Alice and to Walter de Styrchesle sometime her husband, certain lands &c. in Brunne by deed, and the same Walter and Alice, and the said William after he married her, were in peaceful seisin thereof, the escheator by the king's mandate, for certain transgressions done by the said Hamo, took into the king's hand the said lands, and now William Hauteyn son and heir of the said Hamo has procured seisin of those lands in Brunne, together with those which ought to descend to him, 26 Nov. (?) 18 Edw. I.
Cambridge. Inq. (undated.)
The said Walter and Alice produced a charter under the name of Hamo Hautein, by which they were peacefully seised of lands &c. which were of the said Hamo in Brunne, as also William de Scaddesworth who afterwards married the said Alice, until William son and heir of the said Hamo was seised thereof by the king's writ. That land was never taken into the king's hand by the sheriff.

798. Nicholas, son And Heir Of John de Boshale alias de Bossale.
Writ to Thomas de Normanvill and William de Sancto Quintino to enquire whether the said Nicholas, who is in the King's wardship, is of full age as he says, or not, 6 Feb. 18 Edw. I.
York. Inq. made at York on Monday after the Close of Easter, 18 Edw. I.
The said Nicholas was born at Galmeton and baptized in the church there, and was 21 at the feast of St. Michael last past.
