Bedford. Inq. Sunday after the translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 7 Edw. I.
Midelton. 4a. land and a messuage held of the king in chief for keeping the bailiwick of Wilie and the half bailiwick of Bulkelowe; and the said Hugh delivered to Roger his son and heir the said land and messuage with the said bailiwick at the great turn of the sheriff after the feast of St. Michael, 5 Edw. I., and he held them until the death of the said Hugh, on Saturday after the Assumption, 6 Edw. I., when the sheriff and escheator seized the whole tenement of the said Hugh into the king's hand, together with the said 4a., messuage and bailiwick.

He died on Saturday after the Assumption, 6 Edw. I. Roger his son, aged 21 at the feast of St. Benedict in March next, is his next heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari whether the said Hugh held the said messuage and 4a. in Middelton for life or to himself and his heirs, and whether and how he enfeoffed the said Roger thereof, 20 Aug. 7 Edw. I.

Middelton. A messuage and 4a. land held of the king as abovesaid. The jury know nothing of any feoffment made thereof by the said Hugh to the said Roger, but he delivered them to him with the said bailiwicks as abovesaid, and never changed his estate therein afterwards.

Writ to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward, 19 Sept. 7 Edw. I.
[Essex.] Inq. (undated and defective.)
[Unspecified.] A messuage with garden, 150a. arable, 9a. meadow, 13a. pasture, 40s. rent of free tenants, issues of the hays around the fields, &c. held of the king in chief by serjeanty of keeping the king's palfry for forty days at the king's charges at the king's pleasure, and he owed one suit at the king's hundred of Chelmareford ... 2s. yearly, and 6d. for sheriff's aid; and 2a. land held of Thomas Warin by service of 10d. yearly.
He had [four daughters] and heirs, of whom the eldest called Beatrice, who is dead, had a son John de Springefeud, who is under [age and] is in the wardship of Richard de Springefeud his father; the second called Margery, married to Geoffry le Paumere and of full age; [the third] called Isabel, married to Richard de Badewe and of full age; and the fourth called Gencelina, married to [Alexander] de Monteney and of full age.

Essex. Extent Monday before St. Edward ... (defective.)
Great Badewe. A m(essuage), 150a. arable, 9a. meadow, 13a. pasture ... 15s. 7d. rent and ½lb. pepper, pannage of the wood and hays worth 3s. &c., held by serjeanty of keeping a palfry for forty days at the king's cost, one suit at the king's hundred (court) of Chelmersford, and 6d. for the aid of the sheriff of Essex; and 2a. arable held of Thomas son of Warin by 10d. rent.
He had four daughters, the eldest of whom is dead, and her son is 20 at Easter, 7 Edw. I.; the three other daughters are of full age.
Writ of partition into four parts, 20 Jan. 8 Edw. I.
Essex. Partition Thursday the morrow of St. Valentine, 8 Edw. I.
Partition of the lands &c. of the said Peter in Great Badewe into four parts, made in the presence of the above said heirs, viz.—John son of Beatrice the eldest daughter, aged 20, Margery, Isabel, and Alexander de Munteny father of John son and heir of Gencelina the fourth daughter deceased, who was aged 5 about Epiphany in the said year. And if the capital messuage ought to remain wholly to the heir of the eldest daughter, then he ought to satisfy the others with 6a. land each.

Writ to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward, 8 June, 7 Edw. I.
Essex. Inq. Monday before St. Michael, 7 Edw. I.
Pritelwelle. A messuage not built, with 49a. land, which he demised long before his death to William Buss and Lecia his wife by charter of feoffment, rendering 1d. yearly for eight years, and after that 8l. yearly to him and his heirs; 13a. land, whereof he enfeoffed the said William and Lecia four years before his death, rendering ½ mark yearly; and 5a. held of him by John le Butiler of ancient tenure, rendering for that tenement and others 12d.; all held of the king in chief of the honour of Reyleye by service of ¼ knight's fee, and doing suit at the hundred and barony (courts) of Reyleye, and 3d. for hidage. Also 20a. land held of the heirs of Hugh de Polstede, rendering 8s.; and a messuage and 100a. land and a marsh, held of the heirs of Schopilaunde, rendering 36s. yearly, of which marsh he enfeoffed Gilbert de Reyleye of two parts long before his death, rendering a clove gillyflower yearly for nineteen years, and afterwards 30l. yearly. And he held 11s. 11d. rent of free tenants of the fee of Scopilande.

The said William's lands in co. Middlesex with the said fees are worth 16l. 18s. 9d. yearly, and the jury know not by what service they are held except as abovesaid. He held nothing of anyone but the king.
