Royal warrant, under the Queen's sign manual, to the
Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal to authorise
the destruction of tobacco stalks as follows. The
Customs Commissioners have represented to the
Treasury that great art and industry hath of late
been used to bring in tobacco stalks from Holland
and other places ; which by a new invention of
rolling and pressing do supply the use of tobacco
to the great prejudice of the revenue ; and they
have taken as great care to prevent the importation
thereof and have under seizure at this time several
vessels [laden] with tobacco stalks, which they
intend to prosecute at law : but if after condemnation
they should suffer the officers respectively
concerned to sell and dispose thereof the said stalks
will be cut up with tobacco and thereby supply the
consumption of so much tobacco which would
otherwise pay the duties of 5d. per lb. : wherefore
they think it for the King's service that the tobacco
stalks now under seizure and such as shall be seized
hereafter be destroyed, after being appraised at
modern rates, "as hath been heretofore done in
like cases," and that the officers in the Receipt
may be directed to levy tallies gratis to discharge
the [Crown's] moiety of all such condemned stalks,
and the charge of the prosecution be borne by the
Crown, and the officers encouraged with some [such]
suitable recompense for their respective interests
as the said Customs Commissioners shall think fit.
All the said proposals are hereby approved and
ordered to be observed. |

Treasury warrant to Philip Ryley Surveyor General
of Woods, Trent South, to fell seven tons of timber
unfit for shipping in Salcey Forest where it can
best be spared in regard to the vert and venison
and so many decayed trees as will produce 7l. in
offal wood and to apply both proceeds to the repair
of the posts and rails of the Great Lawn in said
forest, being 1,100 foot in length ; it being certified
June 8 last by the regarders at the request of

that part of one side of said lawn "has not been
fenced since the late Civil Wars as formerly and
that the other part of the lawn is fenced only with
hedging, which is to the great detriment of their
Majesties' deer by hindering their free course and
recourse to their feed upon the said lawn." |
