Feb. anno 14 [1431] to him (who had been dispensed by papal authority, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, in virtue of which, having been tonsured, he had obtained the said vicarage) to hold four other benefices with or without cure, compatible with one another and the said vicarage, and to resign all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. April anno 11 [1428] to him, who was of great noble race, to hold for life with the said church, value not exceeding 53 marks, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange. Grant, recapitulating the preceding, that the above dispensation of Martin V and the present pope's validation thereof shall hold good from the date of these presents, notwithstanding that they did not mention that at the date of the said dispensation he, who is by both parents of a race of barons, was holding, as he still does, the canonry and prebend of Nonwyk in St. Wilfrid's, Ripon, and a certain perpetual benefice without cure, called a canonry, at the altar of St. Michael in St. John's, Beverley [see Cal. Mandate, at the petition of the chaplain and clerks of the house or college of Bradgare in the diocese of Canterbury—containing that the late Robert Bradgare and John (rectius Thomas) Jakin, clerks, and John atte Vyse, [layman] of the said diocese, founded to the glory of God and His Mother the Virgin Mary a house or college [of Holy Trinity] in the said town for one perpetual chaplain and two secular clerks, one being in priest's orders, to celebrate masses daily and other divine offices in the parish church of the said town, to live of the fruits etc. of the said house or college, and to live therein in common; that with consent of king Henry (rectius Richard [II]) (fn. 2) and the late Thomas [Arundel], archbishop, and the chapter of Canterbury etc. they endowed it; that they put forth ordinances and statutes etc. [dated Aug. 12, 1398, in Monasticon VI, p. 1391]; and that they had the said foundation, endowment and ordinances etc. confirmed by authority of the ordinary—to summon those concerned, and if they find the aforesaid to be as stated, to confirm the said foundation etc. Humilibus supplicum votis. Mandate, at the petition of Robert Ingerano (rectius Ingerami), priest, of the diocese of Moray, who holds a canonry and prebend in Ross, value not exceeding 6l. sterling, to confirm the grant made to him for his services, by abbot Walter and the convent of Abierbrothoc in the diocese of St. Andrews, of a yearly life pension of 20l. of the money commonly current in Scotland, upon the tithes of sheaves of the parish church, united to the said monastery, of Invernis in the said diocese [of Moray], or, if the said tithes were not enough, upon all the fruits etc. of the said church, to be paid half at Whitsuntide, half at Michaelmas. Faculty, at his recent petition (containing that more than five (rectius two) hundred years ago bishop Hugh founded and endowed the poor hospital of Shirburn near Durham for a certain number of chaplains, one being procurator or master, and clerks, and sixty-five lepers, and that a number of statutes and ordinances were made by him, and certain others by his successor bishop Richard, by their ordinary authority, whereof several cannot be fully observed on account of the diminution of the means of the hospital and the small number of lepers who resort thither, and other lawful causes), to alter the said statutes and ordinances, even if confirmed by papal authority, and to make new ones, etc. Ad ea ex apostolice. 4 Non. Oct. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 52d.)	To Robert Relleston (rectius Rolleston), rector of Gartun in the diocese of York. Prolongation as below. John XXIII dispensed him to hold for ten years with the church of Malborthorp (sic) in the diocese of Lincoln any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. At his recent petition, containing that subsequently, having resigned Malborthorp, he (who is a chaplain and a continual member of the household of king Henry, and is of a great noble race) obtained and held under the said dispensation Gratun (sic) and the archdeaconry of Durham, a non-major dignity, value together not exceeding 120l. sterling, and that the said period is about to expire, the pope hereby prolongs it by other ten years. 10 Kal. July. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 117d.)	To the bishop of Rochester. Mandate, at the recent petition of the master, chaplains, clerks and choristers of the church of St. Michael Royal (in Riola), London, and of John Carpenter, a citizen of London, an executor of the last will of the late Richard Whitington, also a citizen of London—containing that in accordance with the last will of the said Richard the executors thereof erected, founded and endowed a college of a master, chaplains, clerks and choristers, with an alms house for the sustentation of thirteen poor, made statutes for the living in common of the said persons, and made a reasonable compensation to the prior and chapter of the church of Canterbury, to whom belonged the collation, provision or presentation of St. Michael's, the consent of king Henry and of Henry, archbishop of Canterbury, being given by their letters sealed [see Monasticon VI, pp. 738, sqq.]—if he find the aforesaid to be true, to confirm the said erection etc. In the event of the bishop's so doing, the pope decrees that St. Michael's shall henceforth be called a collegiate church, with honours, privileges and insignia after the manner of other collegiate churches of those parts, and grants indult for the said master, chaplains, clerks and choristers to use and enjoy the like habits, honours and pre-eminences as other persons of such collegiate churches. Relaxation, valid during twenty years only, of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the principal feasts of the year and that of the dedication, the usual octaves and days, and of a hundred days to those who during the said octaves and days visit and give alms for the completion, decoration and fabric of the church of the Augustinian Friars’ house of Ballinrobe (Roba) in the diocese of Tuam, which house was lately begun to be constructed, with cloister, refectory and other offices, and whose said church, dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, lacks a bell-tower, and is very destitute of books, chalices and other ecclesiastical ornaments.Univ. To Alexander de Neuton, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, M.A. Decree as above, f. 1, and for the same reason, in regard to the dispensation [here undated] granted by Martin V to him (who said that he was of a great noble race, and is a nephew of Henry, bishop of St. Andrews, and was litigating in the apostolic palace about the perpetual vicarage of Carale in the diocese of St. Andrews, of which he was in possession, and about the archdeaconry of Lothian, a nonmajor, non-elective dignity with cure, of which he was not in possession, value together not exceeding 120l. sterling) to hold for life the said vicarage, if he won it, and any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, or, without the said vicarage, any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign them, simply or for exchange. 1431. 10 Kal. July. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 144.)	To the bishop of Rochester. Mandate, at the recent petition of the master, chaplains, clerks and choristers of St. Michael's Royal (in Riola), London, containing that although of old a place was deputed, ordained and dedicated on the east side of the said church for its cemetery, nevertheless, in time of plague, especially on account of the smells and infections of the bodies of the dead buried there, the said master etc. could not at certain times live at the said church, and that another place, more convenient, has therefore been ordained and also consecrated on the north side of the church—if he find the facts to be as stated, to approve and confirm the said last ordinance, and not to permit bodies to be buried in the said first cemetery, provided that it be not profaned. 1431. 3 Id. July. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 145.)	To Henry [Beaufort], cardinal priest of St. Eusebius's, residing at Rouen. Mandate, at the recent petition of John Seguent the elder, advocate of the royal court of Rouen—containing that formerly, before John Graneren, a Friar Preacher, inquisitor of heresy in those parts, and John Basseti, priest, official of Rouen, he abjured certain articles which savoured of heresy, and performed the penance imposed on him by them—if he find the facts to be as stated, to rehabilitate him, and to grant that he may exercise secular offices as before. In case of the cardinal's absence from Rouen, Giles, abbot of Holy Trinity, Fécamp, O.S.B., in the diocese of Rouen, S.T.M., may and shall execute these presents.Sedes apostolica. June anno 13 [1430] to him, who was holding the said church, value not exceeding 20l., and had been made a bachelor of canon law in the university of Cambridge, to hold for five years with the said church any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. Mandate, at the petition of Donatus Oruaire (rectius Oruairc) and Sadb ingen Ychonchubair, of his diocese (who, not in ignorance that they were related in the triple fourth and the third and fourth degrees of kindred, and in the double third and the third and fourth degrees of affinity, committed fornication and incest more than once, and had offspring), after enjoining penance for their incest, to dispense them to marry, decreeing past and future offspring legitimate. Mandate, at the recent petition of Robert Thurborn, rector of the chapel of Holy Trinity situate within the precincts of the nuns’ monastery of St. Mary, Winchester, M.A. (containing that the fruits etc. of the said chapel, not exceeding in annual value 20l., are not enough for the repair of the chapel and its buildings, which are exposed to ruin, for which repair he has set out his time and slender substance), if he find the facts to be as stated, to grant that Robert shall be able to hold for life with the said chapel, which, as he asserts, has no cure nor people nor parochial insignia, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and that he shall not be bound to reside in the said chapel, even if by its foundation parochial residence should be required. 1431. Kal. Dec. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 227.)	To Walter Hil, perpetual vicar of Luske in the diocese of Dublin. Rehabilitation etc. as below. On the canonry and prebend of Glemethan in Dublin becoming void at the apostolic see by the death there of Thomas Rossel, an abbreviator of apostolic letters, after Martin V's general reservation of benefices which became void at the said see, archbishop Richard, as Walter's petition to the present pope contained, perhaps unaware of the said reservation, made collation and provision thereof to Walter, who, likewise unaware, got possession in virtue thereof, and has detained them for about three years; the cause which arose about them between him and William, bishop of Meath, then a simple clerk, who opposed the said provision etc., being at the instance of the latter committed by Martin V, although not lawfully devolved to the Roman court, to Master John de Mella, a chaplain and auditor of the said and of the present pope, who is said to have taken some proceedings. June anno 13 [1430] to visit during seven years his said archdeaconry by deputy and receive the procurations in ready money to a daily amount of thirty [gros] Tournois of silver, twelve to a gold florin of Florence. 1431 7 Id. Aug. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 247.)	To the archbishop of Armagh and the bishop of Annadown (Enakudunen.). Mandate to receive from David, bishop of Dromore, to whom the pope recently made provision of that see, who was consecrated at the apostolic see by the pope's order, and who is at present in Ireland, in order to save him the labour and expense of coming to the Roman court, the usual oath of fealty, according to the form enclosed, and to send it to the pope as usual. 7 Kal. Aug. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 250.)	To Lewis de Garsiis, canon of Bologna, regent by the pope's order of the office of the auditorship of causes of the court of the apostolic camera (officium Auditoriatus Curie Camere apostolice causarum de mandato nostro regenti). Mandate as below. The recent petition of Laurence Piot, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, contained that when John, bishop of Brechin and Alexander de Lawedre, archdeacon of Dunkeld, were sent to Martin V as ambassadors of James, king of Scots, they in presence of divers noble persons of the nation of Scotland, assigned to the said Laurence, then in the Roman court, certain letters of citation of the said king and enjoined him, in virtue of his obedience and fealty to the said king, to intimate them to William C[r]oyser, archdeacon of Teviotdale, also in the said court, in order that, in accordance therewith, he might cite the said William; that Laurence, fearing to disobey the royal commands, intimated the said letters to William and cited him; that when the matter was brought to the knowledge of Jordan, bishop of Albano and Lewis, cardinal priest of St. Cecilias, they interrogated Laurence as to whether he had cited the said William, and that he answered that he had not cited him, but that the said letters contained a citation; that upon Julian, cardinal deacon of St. Angelo, then an auditor of causes of the court of the apostolic camera, interrogating Laurence by oath, he made like answer, wherefore he was confined for some time in the prisons of the marshal of the said court (carceribus soldani dicte curie aliquamdiu mancipatus fuit), whence he was at length permitted to go forth. At the petition of the said Laurence, who asserts that the said citation has been revoked and annulled by means of the said ambassadors, the pope orders the above Lewis to absolve him from the crime of perjury, enjoining penance, and to rehabilitate him. Dispensation to him—who was formerly dispensed by papal authority, (i) as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, (ii) after he had been so promoted and had obtained the above church, to hold four other benefices with or without cure, compatible with one another and with the said church, even if they were parish churches or perpetual vicarages, or were personatus, perpetual administrations or offices, and were in cathedral churches, or were canonries and prebends or dignities in other than cathedral churches, and such dignities personatus, administrations or offices were elective and had cure, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [above, p. 166]—so that he, who still holds the said church, value not exceeding 20 marks, may hold such other benefices, even if they be canonries and prebends and dignities, non-major, in metropolitan or other cathedral churches, and such dignities be elective and have cure, and may resign them, simply or for exchange. Decree as above, f. 1, and for the same reason, in regard to (i) the rehabilitation granted by Martin V on 13 Kal. Oct. anno 13 [1430] to him, who had been dispensed by papal authority, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and who, without having obtained any other dispensation on account of the said defect, had obtained, by collation of the ordinary, a canonry and prebend of Kildare, which the said pope required him to resign; (ii) the same pope's dispensation to him, granted to him at the same time, to hold four other benefices with or without cure, compatible with one another and with the said benefice, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. 1431. 2 Non. June. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 263.)	To the archdeacon of Sudbury (Sudburis, rectius Sudburie) in Norwich. Mandate as below. The recent petition of John Basser (rectius Basset) and Philip Dene, laymen, of the dioceses of London and Rochester, contained that the late William Hanyngfeld, layman, of the diocese of London, ordained by his last will and testament that two masses a day should be said for his soul during forty years by two secular priests in the church of the Augustinian monastery of Bekenacer in the diocese of London, and that he appointed the said John and Philip as executors. The said petition added that they have hitherto carried out the aforesaid, but that as they are old they doubt whether they will survive the said period of forty years, and that the monks (sic) of the said monastery are not content for the said masses to be said by others than themselves in the said church. At the said petition, the pope orders the above archdeacon, if he find the facts to be so, to grant them licence to have the said masses said in other churches or ecclesiastical places, and by several such priests, and within a briefer period.Humilibus supplicum votis.
