4 Paul II.

De Provisionibus [Prelatorum].

1467.
Id. Nov.
(13 Nov.)
St. Mark's, Rome.
(f. 43.)
To Richard Wyly, archdeacon of Brechin, M.A. Grant etc. as below. The pope has learned that the monastery de Calco alias de Kelso, O.S.B., in the diocese of St. Andrews, has become void by the death of abbot Alan, during whose lifetime its provision was specially reserved to the pope. He has this day, moreover, upon learning that the said Richard desired to be a monk of the said monastery, ordered certain judges to receive him as a monk thereof, give him the habit, and receive his profession. He therefore grants to the said Richard, who is a priest, the said monastery in commendam for three months from the date of these presents, in such wise, however, that he shall be bound in the meantime to receive the said habit and make his profession; and decrees that from now, as from the time when he takes the said habit and makes his profession, provision has been and is made to him of the said monastery. During the said three months he shall be able to dispose of the fruits etc. as true abbots have been able to do, etc. Summi disposicione rectoris.
Concurrent letters to the convent and to the vassals of the monastery, Hodie monasterium vestrum; to the bishop of St. Andrews, Hodie etc.; and to James, king of Scots, Gracie divine. (Hug. and A. de Cortesiis. | Hug. xx.viii. viii. viii. viii. Folani prothon. Bisuntin.) [3 pp.+.]

The consecrating bishop shall therafter receive from him the usual oath of fealty, according to the form enclosed, and shall send it without delay by his own envoy to the pope by Richard's letters patent sealed with Richard's seal; without prejudice to the bishop of St. Andrews, to whom the said monastery is by ordinary right subject… Cum nos nuper. Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian:Paolo ii. 1468–69. Anno 4 Lib. 2, and on a modern end-paper is Mgr. Wenzel's ‘An. 6. to. 5.’ There is no contemporary end-paper with the contemporary description, and although the latter occurs, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume, viz., ‘Secundus…,’ it is almost illegible. It contained the usual summary of the contents of the volume, the various headings of which are as follows:—de provisionibus [prelatorum anno] quinto, on f. i.; de litteris dominorum cardinalium [anno] quarto, on f. 73; [de] tabellionatus [officio anno] quarto, on f. 225; and Sequitur de Regularibus [anno] viio , on f. 269. There are ff. i.–cccxlvi. of text. The volume lacks a leaf or leaves at the end.
  • 2. Each of the following grants occupies about half a page, the space taken varying, of course, with the size of the writing of the several scribes of the Register.
  • 3. ‘impiis,’ recte ‘in piis.’
  • 4. Not clearly written. In the oath it is ‘Dolymg.’
  • 5. i.e. only half the usual tax.
  • 6. de novo erigendilicentiam.
  • 7. cumortis ortalitiis.
