Lateran Regesta, Vol. DCXLVI. (fn. 1)

3 Paul II.

De Diversis Formis.

1466.
15 Kal. Oct.
(17 Sept.)
St. Mark's, Rome.
(f. 4.)
To Thomas Wandre, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Chedder in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Indult to him, a priest, for seven years to take the fruits of the said vicarage, and not to be bound meanwhile to reside therein, whilst residing in the Roman court or studying letters in an university.Vite ac morum.
Concurrent mandate to the bishops of London and Lincoln, and the abbot of St. Albans in the diocese of Lincoln. Hodie dilecto filio. (Hug. and Ja. de Rizonibus, A. de Montia. | Hug. xiii. xi. Folani.) [12/3 pp.]
Prid. Id. Dec.
(12 Dec.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 17.)
To the prior of Buttivant (Botthonie) in the diocese of Cloyne (Clonen.), and the archdeacon and Maurice Ossuliband, canon, of Cloyne. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Donatus Oconbagyth, priest, of the diocese of Cloyne, that Donald Ossuliband, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Drissean alias Bylmide [sic] in the diocese of Ardfert, has committed simony, dilapidated the goods of the said vicarage, and for several years has not resided therein; and the recent petition of the said Donatus contained that the fruits etc. of the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Raydleryn in the said diocese are so slight that its holder cannot be maintained, and that if that vicarage (which is void because John Omorchud, having obtained it by canonical collation, has held it for more than a year without having himself ordained priest and without dispensation) were united to that of Drissean for the said Donatus's lifetime he could be more decently maintained and could serve both churches. The pope therefore hereby orders the above three, if the said Donatus (who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a clerk and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and who in virtue thereof has been so ordained) will accuse the said Donald before the above three, to summon Donald and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him from the said vicarage of Drissean, and in that event to collate and assign that vicarage, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling, to Donatus, and moreover to unite thereto for his lifetime the said vicarage of Raydleryn, value not exceeding 2 marks sterling. The pope hereby specially dispenses him to receive and retain the said vicarage of Raydleryn, in the event of its being united to Drissean, notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Vite etc. (P. and A. de Piscia. | P. xxx. Decimoseptimo Kal. Februarii Anno Tertio. de Varris.) [4 pp. +. See above, p. 515.]
15 Kal. Jan.
(15 Feb.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 31.)
To Thomas Hedley, rector of the parish church of Caundell in the diocese of Salisbury, I.U.B. Grant that the letters by which Pius II dispensed him to receive and retain for life together with the said church any one other benefice, or without that church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if major or principal dignities, etc., or parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, shall hold good from the present date, as if they did not state that the value of the said church did not exceed 8l. sterling, whereas it exceeded that sum, although not 18l. sterling. Litterarum sciencia, vite etc. (F. and A. de Cortesiis. | F. xx. Expedita sesto [sic] Ydus Januarii Anno Tertio. Saxenaten.) [2 pp. See Vol. XI, p. 530.]

To Martin Vaus, dean of Caithness. The said ordinary etc. is to certify the clerks of the papal Camera, or its collector or sub-collector in those parts, of the date of collation and the name of the person to whom the deanery shall be collated. Vite etc. (P. and A. de Piscia. | P. xxx. de Varris.) [1½ pp.]

(f. 91.)
To Thomas Waus, dean of Glasgow. Indult to him, who is a member of the household of William, bishop of Ostia, and holds by papal dispensation inter cetera the deaneries of Glasgow and Ross, which are both major elective dignities with cure, to resign them and any other his benefices to the ordinaries etc., simply or for exchange, without requiring licence of the apostolic see, etc., as in the preceding, mutatis mutandis. Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian:Paolo II. 1466. Anno 3. Lib. 1, and on the inside is Mgr. Wenzel's ‘An. 3. to. 17 nelle Rubricelle.’ A contemporary end-paper has the contemporary description: Primus de diversis formis anno iiio . domini nostri domini Pauli pape ii., the order to rubricate, ‘R(ecipe) + (representing ‘Petrus de Sancta Cruce’; see the description of Reg. Lat. DCLXXI, below) P.,’ and the answering ‘Rubricatus [est],’ below which is ‘Habui g(rossos) ii.’ In the top left-hand corner is also the contemporary note ‘Quesivit Magni’ —the name which has been noticed as occasionally occurring in the loop of the ‘P’ of ‘Paulus’ at the beginning of bulls. The full name of ‘Magni’ was Johannes Magni, and he was one of the clerks of the Register. In Reg. Lat. DCLXIV, f. 119, under date 24 May, 1468 (9 Kal. June anno 4), is the appointment of Stephanus Gouppillon, presbyter, Rothomagensis, to the ‘locus unius ex clericis in Registro litterarum apostolicarum scribentibus,’ void by the resignation of ‘Johannes Magni,' ‘nuper ipsius Registri clericus scribens, et infra numerum inibi scribentium clericorum existens.’ The above contemporary description appears also, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume. There are ff. i.–cccxxxiiii. of text, + f. cccxxxv. blank.
