To abbot William and the convent of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary, Cristall, in the diocese of York, immediately subject to the apostolic see. Indult, at their recent petition (containing that for the defence of the rights of the said monastery they desire that one of its monks shall always be learned (litteratum), in order to defend its rights in law when needful), for the said abbot and his successors to send one of the monks to study in the faculty of laws in a university, (fn. 5) and to substitute another in his stead as often as opportune; with indult for such monk to study in the said faculty and receive the degrees of licentiate and doctor and exercise any scholastic acts.
