To John Oragill, [bishop] elect of Kilmore. Faculty at his petition, to whom the pope has [recently] made provision of the said church, to be consecrated by any catholic bishop of his choice in comunion with the apostolic see, assisted by two or three like bishops. He is first to take to the consecrating bishop his oath of fealty according to the form enclosed, and is to send it to the pope by his letters patent sealed with his seal; without prejudice to the archbishop of Armagh, to whom the said church is by metropolitical right subject. Cum nos [nuper, or pridem] ecclesie Kelmoren. (P. and Jo. de Rizonibus. P. xxviii. de Varris.) [1 p.]
1464[–5].
Prid. Id. Feb.
(12 Feb.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 112d.)
To the provost of Tuam. Mandate, as below. The monastery of St. John the Evangelist, Tuam, O.S.A., became void at the apostolic see by the death there of abbot William Macuede, and therefore ipso facto reserved to Pius II, under his general reservation of provisions of all churches and monasteries which became void at the said see; and, not having been otherwise disposed of by that pope before his death, still remains void and reserved. The pope, therefore, orders the above provost to cause Nicholas Olacnayn, a canon of Tuam (who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, or a canonry and prebend in a cathedral church, after which he caused himself to be so promoted) to be received as a canon of the said monastery, give him the regular habit, and receive his profession, and thereafter to make provision to him of the said monastery, value not exceeding 20 marks sterling; summoning and removing Donald Onaray, a canon thereof (who, without any papal provision or other title, at least canonical, has unduly detained it for more than a year), and any other unlawful detainer. The pope hereby specially dispenses the said Nicholas to receive and exercise the rule and administration, and to govern the monastery in spirituals and temporals, grants that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop of his choice, and wills that as soon as he has made his profession, etc., he shall cease to be a canon of Tuam; without prejudice to the archbishop of Tuam, to whom the said monastery is by ordinary right subject. Solicite considerationis. (P. and Alanus. | P. xxxx. de Varris.) [4½ pp.]

Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian:Paolo II. 1465. Anno 1. Lib. 1, and on a modern end-paper is Mgr. Wenzel's ‘An. 2. to. 2.’ No contemporary end-paper survives, and the contemporary description which it doubtless contained has therefore disappeared. It occurs, however, as usual, though hardly legible, on the bottom edge of the volume, viz.: Primus de provisionibus prelatorum anno primo domini nostri domini Pauli pape ii. The heading ‘De provisionibus prelatorum [anno] primo’ occurs also on f. 128. There are ff. ii. (damaged)cccx. of text.
  • 2. The inner margin of the text is damaged from this point to the end of the volume.
  • 3. The address is inadvertently omitted in the text. It was added by the corrector in the margin, but the margin is damaged, as just mentioned.
  • 4. The damage mentioned above has destroyed what was doubtless the word ‘Anglie.’
  • 5. Destroyed as above.
