Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume, which is bound in red, unlike the Registers of Pius II, which are bound in blue, is a modern black leather label, with: ’P. ii. Sec. L. i.’ Inside the volume is the front half of the original thick parchment binding, with: ‘i. Secret(arum) bulla[rum].’ Another parchment flyleaf follows with the contemporary description: ‘Primus liber secretus sanctissimi in Christo patris et domini nostri domini Pauli divina providentia pape ii, inceptus de mense Septembris anni millesimi quadringentesimi lxiiii.’ Three pages of Rubricelle follow, headed: ‘Rubricelle libri primi secreti bullarum sanctissimi domini nostri domini Pauli pape ii. reg[ist]rat(e) secrete etc.’ The volume is a thin one, containing only ff. i to lxvi of text. A bull on ff. 13d.–14d. begins ‘Pius etc.’ evidently an error for ‘Paulus etc.,’ being dated at St. Peter's, Rome, 1464[–5], 14 Kal. April anno 1. With this exception all the bulls in the volume commence ‘Paulus etc.,’ so that this begins the series of the Vatican Registers of that pope. It is wrongly assigned to Pius II in Palmieri's Manuductio.
