Motu proprio appointing him, who is of a great race of nobles, and is proctor of Henry king of England, a notary of the pope and the apostolic see, with the enjoyment of all privileges etc. with other such notaries. Before receiving the insignia of office he is to take oath in the usual form to Lewis cardinal priest of St. Laurence's in Damaso, the pope's chamberlain. Pii patris. (Ja. Lucen. | l. Ja. Bouron. (f 68.)		 To Richard Rudhale, archdeacon of Hereford, doctor of decrees and a sub-collector of the papal Camera in England. Dispensation to him (who was dispensed by Eugenius IV to [receive and] retain for life with the parish church of Redne Nova in the diocese of Hereford any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church or its perpetual vicarage or a major or principal dignity etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, and afterwards by Nicholas V to receive and retain for ten years with the said archdeaconry and parish church one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church or its perpetual vicarage or a major or principal dignity etc., and who has faithfully exercised the office of a sub-collector in England for many years, and all of whose benefices and their values etc. the pope holds as sufficiently expressed hereby) to receive and retain for life three benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if three major or principal dignities etc., or such mixed, provided that they be not three parish churches or perpetual vicarages, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Appointing him (who has been examined in presence of Angelus bishop of Rieti (Reatin.), regent of the penitentiary by order of the pope), a penitentiary in the basilica of St. Peter and the Roman court, and a papal chaplain. Motu proprio appointing him, during the pleasure of the pope and the apostolic see (he having in the times of Nicholas V and Calixtus III faithfully and laudably exercised, as he does at present, the office of the collectorate in the realm of England), collector and receiver-general of fruits etc. due to the apostolic see in the said realm and all its cities and dioceses; with the usual faculties and powers, requirement to render an account every two years, and to take the usual oath of fealty etc. to Lewis cardinal priest of St. Laurence's in Damaso, papal chamberlain, etc. Probate fidei. (f. 288.)		 To Matthew Dewe, perpetual chaplain at the altar of St. Stephen in the church of St. Sepulchre without New gate in the city of London. Appointing him (on whose behalf John earl of Worcester has also petitioned, alleging Matthew to be his well-beloved), a chaplain of the pope and the apostolic see, with the enjoyment of all indulgences, immunities, liberties, exemptions and privileges granted to papal chaplains by John XXII and Clement VI, and notwithstanding the restrictions etc. by Innocent VI, Gregory XI and Urban V. Virtutibus clarens. (A. de Piscia. | xxx. M. Amici. F. de Maffeis. Je. de Sala.) [In the margin:No(vembris). 1 p. —. In the left-hand margin at the beginning, below A. de Piscia, is ‘Per cancellariam.’]

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern red leather label, with: ’Pii ii. Offic. An. i. ii. iii. Lib. i.,’ and on the bottom edge of the volume is the usual contemporary description, apparently: ‘i. Off[ici]orum Pii ii.’ Inside the volume is the usual front half of the original stout parchment binding, with the post-contemporary (? 16th cent.) description: ‘Primus Officiorum Pii ii,’ etc., the original contemporary description ‘Officiorum’ (?) being virtually invisible. There are 54 pp. of Rubricelle in an apparently 17th cent. hand, headed: ‘Rubricellae primi libri Officiorum sanctissimi in Christo patris et domini nostri domini Pii divina providentia papae ii. inceptae de mense Septembris anno domini 1468 (rectius 1458) pontificatus prefati domini nostri papae anno primo (the e-cedilla of the MS. heading is here represented in each case by ‘ae’),’ and ending: ‘Finis huius libri Rubricellarum.’ The text comprises ff. i to cccx., and covers the period of the first three years of Pius ii.
  • 2. ‘Non.’ of the text is cancelled and ‘septimo Idus’ is substituted in the margin.
  • 3. On f. 275 is the appointment as an honorary papal chaplain, dated at Petriolo in the diocese of Siena, 1460, 6 Id. June, anno 2 of ‘Nicolaus Johannis ordinis fratrum heremitarum sancti Augustini professor,’ his diocese etc. not being mentioned, so that his nationality remains unknown.
