To John, prior of the Augustinian priory or monastery of Hexham in the diocese of York. Dispensation to receive and retain in commendam for life with the said priory or monastery (in which there is a large number of monks or canons, (fn. 5) and which, on account of its having been twice burned by the Scots, (fn. 6) of wars and mortalities and very many divers other inconveniences, has been reduced to such great ruin and destruction that from its slender fruits the prior cannot maintain himself and his state and bear his burdens) any benefice with or without cure, secular or regular of his order, even if a parish church or its perpetual vicarage, or a chantry or an annual or a free chapel, and if of lay patronage, and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.
