Vatican Regesta. Vol. DII.

De Curia.

4 Calixtus III.

1458.
14 Kal. July.
(18 June).
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 340d.)
To Robert Thorpe (cf. below) a canon regular of the cathedral or conventual church of St. Mary, Carlisle (Karlionen.), O.S.A. Dispensation to him, a priest, to receive and retain for life any benefice with or without cure wont to be governed by secular clerks, even if a parish church or its perpetual vicarage or a chantry, and of lay patronage and of any value, and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, and to exercise the cure and administration of souls therein. Religionis zelus, vite etc. (Ja. de Piccolominibus. | xxx. G. de Puteo. P. de Legendorff. P. de Spinosis.) [In the margin: Jun[i]i. 1 p. The foregoing bull of Calixtus III was found in the course of examining the ‘Vatican’ Registers of his successor, Pius II. It occurs in ‘Vatican’ Register, No. DII, having been registered there for a reason not explained in the margin or otherwise. It might be supposed that the scribe of the copy in the Register inadvertently wrote the superscription ‘Calistus’ instead of ‘Pius.’ He has, however, himself furnished the proof that he really meant ‘Calistus,’ not ‘Pius.’ For he had already written ‘Pius etc. dilecto filio Roberto Thorppe (cf. above) canonico regulari ecclesie cathedralis siue conu[entualis],’ when he perceived his error and stopped, converted ‘Pius’ as well as he could into ‘Calistus’ by erasing the stem of the ‘P’ and so on, but not satisfied with the result, cancelled his false start altogether and registered the bull afresh immediately below it. That it really belongs to Calixtus III is confirmed by the fact of its being of the 4th year of the pontificate, whereas the bulls of Pius II in Register DII. belong to the 2nd year.]
