De Prebendis Et Dignitatibus Vacaturis.

(f. 9d.)		 To Thomas Macmurcheartayd. Collation and provision to him (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman (i) to be promoted to all, even holy orders, and hold a benefice with or without cure, (ii) to hold another compatible benefice with or without cure, after which dispensations he had himself so promoted; and all of whose benefices and their values and his dispensations the pope holds to be expressed by these presents) of a canonry of Ardagh, with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend and a dignity (not major) etc. of that church, and of a benefice with or without cure wont to be assigned to secular clerks, value not exceeding 25 marks sterling if with cure, or 18 if without, in the collation etc. of the prioress and convent of the Cistercian nuns’ priory de Lochsydii (i.e. Lochsydy) in the diocese of Meath. He is hereby dispensed to receive and retain such canonry and prebend and dignity etc. or benefice, notwithstanding the said defect etc. Vite etc.

Collation and provision to him (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of an unmarried man or a priest (fn. 2) and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders, and hold a benefice even with cure, and who, having been thereafter so promoted and having obtained the perpetual vicarage of Achadoliunga in the diocese of Armagh, subsequently resigned it, and whom the pope hereby absolves from all sentences of excommunication etc. as far only as regards the taking effect of these presents) of a canonry of Armagh with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend and a sinecure administration or office in the said church. Collation and provision to him, who was lately dispensed on account of illegitimacy as the son of unmarried parents, (i) by authority of the ordinary to be promoted to minor orders and hold a benefice without cure (ii) by papal authority (after he had been made a clerk) to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold another benefice even with cure, and all of whose benefices and their values and his dispensations the pope holds to be expressed by these presents) of a canonry of Elphin, with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend in the said church (fn. 3). He is hereby dispensed to receive and retain such canonry and prebend, notwithstanding his said defect etc. Vite etc.

Collation and provision to him, who is of noble birth, of a canonry of Ross, with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend and dignity etc. of that church, and of a benefice wont to be assigned to secular clerks, with or without cure, even if it be a canonry and prebend [or a dignity, personatus etc.] in a [cathedral or a ] collegiate church, provided that such dignity be not major, the value of such benefice not exceeding 25 marks sterling if it have cure or be a dignity or a personatus, or 18 marks if without cure and not a dignity or personatus, in the collation etc. of the abbot and convent of the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary the Virgin in Lindores (de Lundonis, rectius ‘de Lundoris’) in the diocese of St. Andrews.   • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Latin: ‘1451. An. vii. Nicolaus V.’ A flyleaf has, in different contemporary hands: ‘R(ecipe) B. A.’ [de Feletis], ‘Primus de prebendis et dignitatibus vacaturis Anno viio .’ and ‘Rubricatus per me B. Fidelem die xiii. Junii 1455.’ On the bottom edge of the volume is the usual contemporary description, virtually illegible, but evidently ‘Primus. … ‘as above, with the addition of ‘domini nostri domini Nicolai pape V.’ The volume contains ff. 1–243 of text + ff. 244–245 blank.
  • 2. de soluto seu presbytero.
  • 3. The heading, de prebendis et dignitatibus, suggests that this letter is incomplete or registered out of place, its proper place being under ‘de prebendis vacaturis.’ A small contemporary cross in the margin opposite this passage suggests that the foregoing criticism is of long standing.
