Martin V ordered him to be dispensed, notwithstanding homicide which he had committed, to be promoted to all … pleased, as above, Reg. Vat. (fn. 2) In order that he may not be deprived of the effect of the said letters, owing to the omission therefrom of mention of his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman (on account of which he had been dispensed by papal authority to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure), and owing to his having held the said treasurership and canonry and prebend without obtaining other dispensation on account of the said defect, the pope hereby rehabilitates him, and grants that his said former rehabilitation and dispensation shall hold good as if they had mentioned his said illegitimacy and earlier dispensation on account thereof, and as if, at the time of the collations and provisions to him of the said canonry and prebend and treasurership he had been sufficiently and expressly dispensed, on account of the said defect, to hold them; with dispensation hereby to retain for life the said rectory, treasurership (which is the lowest (fn. 3)camera respectively [as ibid.], and to receive and hold any compatible benefices of any number and kind, even if etc., and to resign them all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.Sedes apostolica, pia mater. Footnotes

  • 1. que una ex quatuor dignitatibus infra dictam Lincolniensem ecclesiam institutis infimam (apparently corrected to infima) existit.
  • 2. On the back of the volume is the usual modern label, with ‘Nicol. V.de Curia. Liber x. Tom. xxxi.’ Inside the cover is the usual front half of the original sheepskin binding, with ‘mcccl,’ and other more or less contemporary notes, but not the usual number of the Liber. It is followed by a flyleaf with the contemporary description, ‘Liber decimus de curia domini nostri Nicolay divina providencia pape quinti,’ beneath which Giovanni Bissaiga has added ‘Tom. xxxi,’ after which come the rubricelle, headed ‘mccccl. Secuntur rubricelli [sic] decimi libri de Curia incepti in fine anni quinquagesimi quarti [sic] pontificatus domini nostri anno quarto.’ The text follows.
  • 3. cum potestate illos permutandi, an unusually brief form.
