Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual Italian description: 'Eugenio IV. 1438. Anno 8. Lib. 111.' A flyleaf has, in different contemporary hands, Primus de diuersis formis, beneficiis, prebendis, prebendis et dignitatibus, ac dignitatibus vacantibus Anno viii Eugenii pape 4' (which occurs also, hardly legible, on the bottom edge of the volume, as usual), 'Rubricatus per me Conradum Gromberg,' and 'Corradus.' Another flyleaf has the usual modern 'Vidi pro R[everenda] C[amera] A[postolica] H[ib.] A[ng.] O' (the 'O' being perhaps a variant for the 'nihil' which occurs at the corresponding point in some of the other Lateran Registers) and 'Lib. cxi, fol. 317.'
  • 2. The usual order is Nobilitas generis, litterarum sciencia, vite etc.
  • 3. 'Latham' in Cal. Lett. VIII, p. 634.
  • 4. in partibus existenti.
  • 5. impedimentum publice honestatis.
  • 6. parrochialem ecclesiam de K cuius quinquaginta. et decanatum ... Welyngford cuius triginta, necnon quoddam perpetuum beneficium . Saresbirien. et Conventren. diocesum cuius [_], et quod ac ipse decanatus sine cura sunt, necnon canonicatum ecclesie Wellen. et prebendam de M. in eadem quorum octo marcharum sterlingorum fructus ... valorem annuum non excedunt obtines ... i.e. the value of the prebend of St. Mary's is not in-dicated, unless it be meant to be included in the 8 marks as the total value of the prebend of St. Mary's and the canonry and prebend of Wells.
  • 7. In the address the word 'presbytero' has been written over a word which is effaced by means of a reagent; and in the margin several words which were added and marked for insertion in the address after the word presbytero,' have likewise been effaced with the reagent. The application of a further reagent reveals that the effaced words are ' rectori parrochialis ecclesie de Harleston.'
  • 8. 'Quinquaginta,' substituted in the margin as usual by 'An.' in place of the 'Quadraginta' of the text, which is cancelled and has A[ntoniu]s [de Adria] overwritten.
  • 9. In the text of the letter, the spelling 'Brogthon' occurs, as well as again 'Bragthon.'
  • 10. So the incipit implies.
  • 11. quedam portiuncula sive gutta.
  • 12. In the date, the year was written: Millesimo ... tricesimo septimo. The word 'scptimo' is cancelled and overwritten A[ntoniu]s, and in the margin is substituted ` octavo,' with the note: Cassatum et correctum de mandato reverendissimi domini F[rancisci Venetiarum] Portuen. Vicecancellarii, An. de Adria. This note must have been written some years after the dispensation was registered since Francis Condulmarus (the only 'F' under 'Portuen' in Eubel, Hicrarchia, ad.loc.) was not translated from St. Clement's to Porto until 1445.
  • 13. Without mention of the above ordinance.
