The King has granted Henry Roper, yeoman of her wardrobe of beds, George Brygus, groom, and Matthew Johns, page of the same, a forfeit of 40l., as appears by his letters of privy seal addressed to you and the chamberlains of the Exchequer. We pray you "the rather for our sake" that they may enjoy the said forfeit. "Given under our signet at my lord's manor of Richemount," 4 Feb. Signed at head.

In the interests of Christendom however, has again urged the French King to send James' uncle, the Duke of Albany, to the Pope with a view to terminate their dissensions. Edinburgh.

690. [1700, 1875.] JAMES IV. to MAXIMILIAN.
Understands his intention to proceed against the enemies of Christ, as proposed by Pope Julius II. Louis XII. has favoured the project; and Henry VII. strenuously promoted it. Is ready to lay down his life for Christendom; hopes, however, Maximilian will use his efforts to compose the unhappy dissensions between the Pope and the King of France. Though he formerly sent the bp. of Murray on this mission, now commissions the Duke of Albany, that peace may be the better established by the efforts of Maximilian.

Pope Julius has already been anxious for an expedition against the Infidels, which the late King of England was anxious to promote, and which he believes the French King had intended. A new rupture however, has arisen between the French King and the Pope. Has sent the bp. of Murray to conciliate them. Albany has also a commission for the same purpose.

Vetusta Monumenta, Vol. I., Pl. 21–26. 3. Six plates of the tournament from a contemporary MS., the first containing a poem (in facsimile of the handwriting of the period); and, in a modern hand, an extract of the rules to be observed; with a reference to the Chronicles of Hall and Holinshed.
The poem is in four stanzas beginning:—

Harl. MS. 6079, f. 36b. B.M. 4. The jousts on 12 and 13 Feb. [1511], giving the challenge and conditions, and also the marks (fn. 2) obtained by each combatant on each day. Note at the end of each day comparing the merits of the four challengers and recording that the Queen awarded the prizes (worth 200 cr. each), on the first day to Valiante Desyre, viz., Sir Thomas Knevet (sic) for challengers and Richard Blounte for defenders, and on the second day to Coeur Loyal, the King, for challengers and Edmund Howard for defenders. At the end, "for the Kynges ladyes sake" Coeur Loyall ran courses with Lord Howard and Charles Brandon. All who signed the articles took part in the jousts except, apparently, Richard Tempest.

The Holy See granted his ancestors eight months in which to commend to benefices. The Card. knows it has never been his custom to write for benefices in general, not actually vacant. Warns him not to give credence to any Royal letters for ecclesiastical promotions, unless written in Latin, sealed with his signet, and signed by his secretary, even though James may grant them by negligence or through importunity.

From Andrea Badoer, London, 18 Feb.—The King says that jewels in the hands of his ambassador at the Court (the Papal Court) would be insecure; and apparently nothing will be obtained. All persons able to bear arms commanded to be ready by 1 May. The King will not break with France, but has made a show of it; and has sent a servant to France, and another to the Emperor urging agreement with the Signory. As for the reduction of his salary from 100 to 70 ducats, he is content.
