590. MAXIMILIAN to MARGARET OF SAVOY. |
Has received her letter of 21 Sept. by which she advises demanding the duchy of Burgundy and viscounty of Auxon; but he thinks this is not the time, seeing that the French are uppermost and the Pope, in despair, crying out that he fell into the war for the salvation of Italy, trusting that the King of Aragon would help him. He has set the six principal cardinals to move the Queen of France, who is more devout than her husband, to find means of alliance with the French and Venetians against the Emperor; and although the French know well that he has been loyal to them against the Pope and has caused the Swiss rascals to leave the Pope's service, he learns for certain that they will seek to make their profit of him and the King of Aragon. France suspects Aragon to have been the cause of the Pope's attacking him. Names and describes the six cardinals, whose practice is to drive the Spaniards and Almains out of Italy. With the ambassadors of Aragon and England, he has recently by word concluded the alliance which, by report of Guillaume, (fn. 1) she has so much at heart; but he very much mistrusts the King of England whose father twice basely deceived him. The ambassadors of Aragon with the Pope, and the Emperor's, are astounded by the said practices, for their King is unfurnished with men after his foolish enterprises for the recovery of Tripoly, which the Moors have again besieged.
Still hopes that the King of France, by means of the bp. of Gurce, will remain loyal to him. Written 7 Oct. 1510.

[Note of letters received 22 Dec. 1510.]
From Andrea Badoer [to Francesco Graderigo] from London, 30 Sept., detained till 24 Oct.—Wrote on 3 and 9 Sept., but everywhere in France couriers are intercepted. In those [of the] 3rd he wrote that his wife should be sent; and he has promised the King that she shall come with the security for the loan. Has got the amount doubled and promise of more if the security be good. He writes, to Francesco Graderigo, his son-in-law, to get himself made captain of the galleys with which his wife comes, and that the Signory must give her at least 400 ducats for expenses, which he has written to her to make. Has not heard from the Signory since June. The merchants, Morosini, Marcello, Foscari and Grimani will have reported whether he wastes time. Lorenzo Giustinian, who left with Hironimo Giustinian, without taking leave of Badoer, left a very bad reputation in London. Is suffering for his country's sake. The Signory have not written to him for six months, although letters have come to Pasqualigo and the son of Hironimo Grimani. Even the ambassador at Rome has not written. Got the King to write to the Emperor and to France, and (to induce the Emperor to the agreement) to send three heralds, and, afterwards, an ambassador, who is still with the Emperor. On 25 Oct. the messenger he has at last found leaves, and he himself goes to Court to make provision that Venetian letters may pass through France.
