26. Sir Thos. Lake to Four Lords [the Earls of Salisbury, Northampton, Suffolk, and Worcester, see Nov. 23]. The King wishes to know whether the motion of the House of Commons relative to marriages [in the contract for tenures] had been suggested by any of the Lords ; he fears it is a ruse to obtain a prolongation of their sittings. Misdoings of the present Parliament. His Majesty purposes to send them a message that he means to dissolve Parliament before Christmas ; in the mean time, if they will make a clear offer to him for the custody of wards and marriage of heirs, including support as well as supply, they may hope for a gracious answer. The King thinks the notion that he wishes to retain the custody of wards that he may marry them to Scots, is ridiculous.
Nov. 22.
Royston.
27. Sir Thos. Lake to the Earl of Salisbury. Incloses a letter to the Earl of Worcester, about the Masque matters. The King suspects that the House only seeks to prolong its sittings. If the matter of the marriages be long in hand, His Majesty will hardly have patience with it. Sends the Privy Seals about the navy.

Nov. 23.
Royston.
31. Sir Thos. Lake to [Salisbury.] Cautions to be observed in allowing the matter of marriages to be treated in Parliament. The King hopes supply will not be utterly refused. Some papers of the late Archbishop of Canterbury, on church matters, are to be sent for, for the King's use.
Nov. 24.
Royston.
32. Same to [the Same.] Acknowledges his letters. The King wishes the Parliament to be adjourned with the expectation of meeting again, and not be dissolved, if any hope remain of obtaining supply. The King will return to Theobalds to confer with his Lordship, if Parliament continue. The imposition was laid on Scotch wines before the King's coming out of Scotland, and the memorial is false. Sends a letter of Sir Hen. Nevill, relative to a proposed purchase of -- forest.

Nov. 24. Entry of the above. [Warrt. Bk. II., p. 180.]
Nov. 25.
Royston.
35. Sir Thos. Lake to [Salisbury.] The King understands that the Commons intend only to refuse supply, and to consider fresh grievances. Unless good assurance can be had of different procedure, they are to be dissolved as quietly as may be, for he will endure no further taunts and disgraces. His Majesty has had patience, but "he cannot have asinine patience." He thinks some of the speeches uttered in the House approach very nearly to treason, and that he shall have ground to call the speakers to account, &c.
Nov. 25.

Nov. 26.
Royston.
38. Sir Thos. Lake to [the Same.] His Majesty thinks a meeting with the Council about the form of dissolving the House needless ; proposes an adjournment to the next term, and then a dissolution. The letter from the two Dutch Princes, intimating a new suit for assistance and despair of agreement, displeases the King.

Nov. 27.
Royston.
40. Sir Thos. Lake to [Salisbury.] The King thinks the adjournment of Parliament should be longer than till Monday, in order to give time for consideration of his Council, with whom he would not have a formal meeting, because it would seem as though some great matter were in hand. The Parliament to be prorogued on pretence that the gentlemen of the better sort should be in their country residences about Christmas, in order to relieve the people with hospitality; that the King is absent on recreation; and that he expects a French Ambassador to settle the league between the kingdoms. The mention of King Joram troubles His Majesty much; the speaker is to be found out, and punished.
