the Court of Exchequer. In spite of their permission for release of
his lands extended for debt, the Earl of Clanricarde has obtained
counter-orders. Services of himself to the late Earl of Essex, for which
recompense was promised but never granted. Also of his wife to the
Countess of Essex, now Countess of Clanricarde, as tire-woman.
When the Earl's troubles began, took some of his letters to the
Countess, which were then in his own possession, to Peter Ball to read
for him; would have delivered them to the late Queen, but was persuaded to give them up to the Countess, who promised him 1,720£.
for past services, which was paid, and he considered his affair settled,
till he was summoned to the Star Chamber, and fined 3,000£. for misdemeanours. Got the debt installed, and would have paid it, but, by
indirect means, his estate was put into other hands; his property,
worth 10,000£., was wasted, and he became insolvent, 2,000£. of the
debt being assigned by the King to the Earl and Countess of Clanricarde. Desires his bonds may be re-delivered. Other claims against
the Countess. Complains of her traducing him, as betraying the late
Earl, stealing her jewels, and forging her letters. Begs a writ of
subpona against the Earl and Countess, to answer the premises. |
