Fought at Fontenoy, 1745; Falkirk, 1746; Culloden, 1746, and the Rochefort expedition; commanded a brigade in the Seven Years' War; M.P. for Lostwithiel, 1762–6; Stamford, 1768–96; Governor of Minorca, 1766–8.

FIELD-MARSHAL MARQUESS TOWNSHEND (16th July, 1795).

George Townshend, fourth Viscount and first Marquess Townshend; fought at Culloden; brought in Militia Bill, 1757; was Brigadier-General under Wolfe at Quebec, 1759; commanded left wing on the Heights of Abraham, and on Wolfe's death took chief command; Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1767, which office he brought into disrepute by bad administration and his dissipated habits; recalled in 1772 and reappointed Master-General of the Ordnance. He became Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk 1792, and was created Field-Marshal in 1796.

GENERAL SIR WILLIAM FAWCETT (18th July, 1796).

Translated Marshal Saxe's Reveries or Memoirs of the Art of War, 1757. Was aide-de-camp to General Elliott in Germany, 1757; he pleased George II by announcing the victory of Warburg to him in German, 1760; enlisted Hessians and Brunswickers to serve against America; became Governor of Gravesend, and after the unsuccessful campaign in Flanders (1794–5) was superseded as Adjutant-General. He was made General in 1796, and Privy Councillor in 1799.

GENERAL THE RT. HON. SIR DAVID DUNDAS (2nd April, 1804).

Was present at the attack on St. Malo, the capture of Cherbourg, at St. Cas; served in Orfa 1762. He wrote drill books which were issued for official use in the Army; and he also wrote Principles of Military Movements, chiefly applicable to Infantry (1788). He defeated the French at Tuyl 1794, and accompanied the Duke of York to the Helder 1799. Became Commanderin-Chief 1809–11, and Privy Councillor 1809.

FIELD-MARSHAL THE RT. HON. SIR SAMUEL HULSE (19th Feb., 1820).

Third baronet, grandson of Sir Edward Hulse, physician to George II. Commanded first battalion of 1st Foot Guards in Flanders, 1793; took part in Helder expedition, 1799; Treasurer and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household to George IV; member of the Privy Council.

His wit and learning were celebrated, and he frequently dined with Walpole, who, however, was a little irritated at his contradicting him, and beating him at billiards."

Architect to George III, 1762–8. Famous for the style of building decoration that goes by his name and that of his brothers. Built the Adelphi, 1769–71; M.P. for Kinross, 1768. Died at 13 Albemarle Street, W., on 3rd March, 1792; buried in Westminster Abbey.

JOHN SOANE, afterwards SIR JOHN SOANE (20th Jan., 1807).

The well-known architect of the Bank of England. Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy and founder of the Soane Museum, Lincoln's Inn Field. He died in 1837.

All the above were appointed directly by and were responsible only to the Chelsea Commissioners.

On the death of Sir John Soane fresh arrangements were made, and from the 1st July, 1837, the Clerk of Works was an official under H.M. Office of Works.
