church of Ketering, by Alan de Crophill, clerk, William de Houton, Alan de Houthom, Stephen Kysman of Haringworth, clerks, John de Werdon the elder, knight, Thomas de Stone, William Sidrak of Rogyham, Geoffrey de Kylkenny, Philip de Kilkenny his brother, Roger ad Cameram of Weldon, Edmund Henerd, Thomas de Preston, Henry Pollard, Robert Pollard his brother, John Gybon, William de Wyelston, John de Wyelston the younger, Robert Forster of Carleton, Nicholas de Crophill, Robert Senior, and Geoffrey de Rogyngham, laymen, who burned the doors, broke the windows, beat and wounded clerks and laymen in the church, who were keeping the church on John's behalf, took their clothes and money, killed a clerk, threw down images of Christ crucified and St. Mary the Virgin and other saints, as if they were infidels, cut down trees in the cemetery and burned the manse, carried off money, clothes, corn, animals, and other goods of the said rector to the value of 300l;
occupied the church for three months, and kept there lewd women for many days and nights; moreover, the said John de Werdon, knight, and Alan de Crophill got letters from the king's court against John Wade, causing him and his people to be banished from the realm. If these things were so, the perpetrators of these outrages are to be excommunicated, and cited to appear before the pope within two months. |

(1.) Ordinance of Ralph, bishop of Bath and Wells, dated Wells, 2 August 1344 and confirmed on the same day by the chapter. Exemplifying— |

(α) An ordinance of Jocelin, bishop of Bath and Wells, signed by Alexander the dean and part of the chapter, and dated 4 Non. March in the second year of his pontificate, whereby the church of Pilton is made the precentorship of Wells, and the manor of Cumbe, in which the precentorship formerly consisted, is divided into eight prebends, and the provostship of the manor is given to a canon of Wells who is to pay 40l. a year to the other canons. Similarly the church of Wynesham—formerly assigned to the chancellorship, and to one prebend of 100s.—is assigned to the one prebend of 100s. and another consisting of the residue, while the church of Kyngesbyri is assigned to the chancellorship. The church of Evercris is to go to the treasurer, who shall be bound to make sufficient and decent provision of lights, tapers, candles, incense, and all other things which William, late treasurer, was bound to provide. The church of St. Cuthbert, Wells, formerly assigned to the treasurer, is granted in augmentation of the common fund, except the land and rents thereto pertaining. The land, alder grove, and moor of Landsharaleg’, formerly belonging to the archdeacon of Wells, is assigned to the succentor, as is the land in the manor of Wells formerly belonging to the treasurer William, except his house, which is to be used in enlarging the church of Wells. Alexander the dean, Hugh the archdeacon, and Thomas the treasurer are named as consenting parties. |
(β) Confirmation, not dated, by Thomas, precentor, and the chapter of Wells, of an ordinance made in foreign parts in the presence of Ralph, dean, and part of the chapter, whereby, after the death or resignation of William de Cerde, the manor of Cumbe which produced [eight?] prebends of 100s. shall be made into ten prebends of 10 marks each, and a provostship to be held by one of the ten prebendaries who is to be nominated by the bishop. The provost is to pay the other canons 10 marks each a year, by quarterly payments at Wells, and 3 marks to his vicar at Wells.
The canons are to pay at least 2 marks each to their vicars. The provost is also to have the church of Cumbe; and the bishop is to be relieved of the payment of the prebend now held by Richard the official, and charged on the money and debts of the archdeaconry of Wells. |

(δ) Ordinance of the same, with the consent of P. dean and the chapter of Wells, dated on the morrow of Christmas, at Wells, anno pont 29, whereby the provostships of Cumbe, with the churches of Chard (Cerda) and Welinton, and of Wynesham, not being dignities are united into one provostry consisting of the manors of Cumbe and Winesham and the churches of Cumbe, Wynesham, Chard, and Welinton, except a certain land and alder grove called ‘Prestlegh,’ and a small meadow called ‘Spurtmede’ within the circuit of the bishop's wood, and belonging to Welinton, in which also a vicarage is to be established consisting of the small tithes and the dues of the altars of Bokland and Welinton, and of the tithes of mills and hay except from the demesnes of the bishop, and of Gerbert, knight, of Welinton, and also of the vicarage house and yard on the south side of the church, and another house on the east. The vicarage of Chard is likewise to consist of small tithes, dues and tithes of hay except as above, out of which the vicar is to pay to the provost 3 marks a year, in quarterly payments; the provost is to have all the sheaves, and a log from the bishop's woods; the vicar is to have a house on the east side of the church, with a yard opposite the provost's court, but is not to build or open new gates in that direction. The vicarages of Chard and Welmton are to be in the bishop's gift. The vicar of Cumbe is also to have the small tithes and offerings of the mother church and the chapel of Wateleston, except the tithe of the lambs, but he is to have the sheaves of beans and the tithe of hay, except from the provost, and a house with a yard on the south side of the street which leads to Staunton. The vicarage of Winesham is also to consist of tithes except from the provost; the vicar is to pay the provost 40s. a year, in quarterly payments. If the vicarages of Cumbe and Winesham are not worth 5 marks a year each,
the bishop may raise them to that value. The provost is to have the right of presentation. The vicars are to have the cure of souls. The bishop is to have jurisdiction over the churches of Welinton and Chard, and the dean and chapter over those of Winesham and Cumbe. The provost shall distribute 10 marks a year to each of fifteen prebendaries, of whom he shall be one, and 3 marks a year to his vicar at Wells, the other prebendaries 2. The provost may be appointed to a prebend not in his provostry, in which case his prebend may be given to another, but in that case the provost must make up the vicar's salary to 3 marks a year until he gets a better vicarage. He must also pay 20 marks a year to the service of the Blessed Virgin, and 10 marks to the service for the dead. The residue of the profits of the provostry he may keep. |

The ordinance (1) further declares that the provost must be a canon, and unites the prebend of Cumbe twelfth, to the provostship, saving the right of the dean and chapter to a year's fruits upon the vacancy of the prebend. |
